JPG to PNG Converter

Use this free JPG to PNG converter to turn a JPG photo into a PNG file. The picture keeps the same width and height in pixels, and the tool does not crop or resize it. PNG is already selected, so you can upload a file and convert it right away.

  • In the free tool, each image can be up to 5 MB, and you can convert 30 images per day per visitor.
  • A very large photo can produce a PNG over 20 MB. That job fails with an "output too large" message instead of returning a cut-off file.
  • A JPG has no transparent areas, so the PNG you get has none either.

Result

Your PNG will appear here.

The free web tool takes images up to 5 MB, 30 per day. Signed in, the limit is 10 MB. The image keeps its pixel size.

Retention: web-tool results are deleted after 10 minutes and no history is kept. API results are kept 1 day on the free plan and 7 days on Starter and Pro (30 days on Business).

  • No account needed

30 images per day for free, no watermark.

  • Original size kept

The image is re-encoded at its full pixel size. Nothing is resized, and camera and location tags are not copied into the result.

  • Deleted automatically

Web tool results are removed after 10 minutes.

Privacy: what you submit is used only to make this file. The working copy is deleted when the job ends, the result after 10 minutes. See the privacy policy.

Do this from your code

The same request, built from the input and options above. Create an account to get an API key.

curl -X POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/render \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $AIIPWORLD_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"html":"","output":"pdf","options":{}}'

# returns {"job_id": "...", "status": "queued"}; then poll:
curl https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/jobs/JOB_ID -H "Authorization: Bearer $AIIPWORLD_API_KEY"

Batches

The web tool handles 1 image at a time. The API takes one request per image, so you can script as many as your plan allows.

Retention

Web-tool results are kept 10 minutes; free API results 1 day; Starter and Pro results 7 days; Business 30 days. The web tool allows 10 conversions per minute and 50 per day per visitor.

In one sentence

A free online tool that converts a JPG (or PNG, WebP, GIF or BMP) image to PNG at the same pixel size, storing the pixels without further compression loss.

Key facts

  • Input: JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF or BMP, up to 5 MB in the free tool and 10 MB when signed in, and up to 16 MP (4096 x 4096); the type is read from the file content.
  • Output: a PNG with the same width and height; detail the JPG already lost does not come back, and a JPG has no transparent areas, so the PNG has none.
  • In our test a 5.6 KB JPG of 300 x 225 px became a 139 KB PNG, and a 775 KB photograph became a 7.5 MB PNG; a result over 20 MB fails with an output too large message instead of a cut-off file.
  • A phone photo stored rotated is turned upright and camera and location tags are not copied; the upload is deleted when the job ends and the result after 10 minutes; signed-in users pay 1 credit per image.
  • Free without an account: up to 10 conversions per minute and 50 per day per visitor, no watermark. Signed in, each render costs 1 credit (100 free credits every month).
  • Files are deleted automatically: 10 minutes after conversion without an account, 1 day with a free account.
  • Developers can run the same render with POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/render and an API key (see the API docs page).

How it works

  1. Choose a PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF or BMP file from your device.
  2. Check the preview and the image size that the browser shows before you upload.
  3. Leave PNG selected under Convert to, or pick JPEG or WebP if you need another format.
  4. Start the conversion and wait for the result panel to appear.
  5. Check the file size and the pixel size shown, then download the PNG.

Example output

Original JPG, 300 x 225 px, 5.6 KB

The sample photograph as a JPG

Converted PNG, 139 KB

The sample photograph converted to PNG
A small test photograph (300 x 225 px JPG, 5.6 KB) converted with Convert to PNG: a 139 KB PNG with the same pixel size. PNG keeps the pixels as they are, so the file is larger. Converted by this site's own engine. Open the converted file (or select the picture) to see it at full size.

How to convert JPG to PNG

Start by opening the tool and choosing your JPG file. The browser checks the file type, the file size and the pixel count, then shows a preview with the image size. If the file is refused, the message tells you which limit it breaks.

PNG is already selected under Convert to, so you only need to start the conversion. When the job ends, the result panel shows the preview on a checkerboard, the file size and the pixel size. Download the file from there.

  • Check the preview before you download to confirm you have the right picture.
  • The result keeps the original width and height.

What JPG to PNG conversion does

The conversion decodes your JPG into pixels and then encodes those pixels again as a PNG. The width and height in pixels stay the same, and nothing is cropped. The process is not artificial intelligence. It is a standard image conversion done by sharp, an image library that runs on our servers.

Your image is sent to our server for the conversion, so it is not processed in your browser. JPG and JPEG are the same format, so a JPEG to PNG conversion works the same way. A phone photo stored rotated is turned upright during the conversion.

Why people convert JPG to PNG

Some programs and upload forms ask for PNG files. Before you convert, check the requirements of the place where the file will go.

Saving a picture as PNG also stops further loss when you save it again. Each time a JPG is saved, it loses some detail. A PNG stores the pixels it is given without compression loss, so saving as PNG does not add new loss.

JPG to PNG: what you get and what you do not

A PNG stores the decoded pixels without further compression loss. However, the detail that the JPG already lost does not come back. Compression marks that are already in the JPG stay in the PNG.

In our test, a small photograph of 300 x 225 px that was a 5.6 KB JPG became a PNG of about 139 KB. The file is much larger, but the picture is not better than the JPG it came from.

Why the PNG is so much bigger than the JPG

PNG uses lossless compression, while JPEG is lossy. MDN describes PNG as lossless and JPEG as a lossy format. A lossless file must keep every pixel, so it is often much larger for photographs.

In our synthetic test, a 2000 x 1500 px photograph that was a 775 KB JPG became a PNG of 7.5 MB, about ten times larger. Results vary by picture, so check the file size in the results panel.

Does JPG to PNG make the background transparent?

No. A JPG has no alpha channel, so it has no transparent areas to carry over. The PNG you get is fully opaque.

This tool does not remove backgrounds and does not make anything transparent. Converting never adds transparency. If you need a transparent background, you need a source image that already has one.

When JPG to PNG makes sense, and when it does not

MDN recommends lossless encoding for screenshots, diagrams, logos and line art. Converting these from JPG to PNG is a sensible choice when you have the original JPG and need a file that will not gain more loss on each save.

For photographs, keeping the JPG is often the better choice, because a PNG of a photo can be very large. If you want a file smaller than the PNG, choose WebP in the Convert to list.

Rotated phone photos and metadata

If a phone photo is stored rotated, the tool reads the EXIF orientation tag and turns the picture upright in the result. You do not need to rotate it first.

Camera and location tags, such as EXIF and GPS data, are not copied into the PNG. The picture is never resized or cropped, so the pixel size stays the same as the original.

Other input formats

The tool accepts PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and BMP files. The file type is read from the file content, not from the file name, so a renamed file is still handled by what it really is.

Animated GIF and animated WebP files are converted from their first frame only, and the result is a still image. SVG, PDF, TIFF, HEIC and AVIF files are not accepted. For SVG files, use the SVG to PNG tool instead.

Size and file limits

In the free tool, each image can be up to 5 MB, and you can convert 30 images per day per visitor. Each image can be up to 16 MP (4096 x 4096). Signed-in users can convert images up to 10 MB each.

Signed-in conversions use 1 credit per image, plus 1 credit for each 5 MB of result after the first 5 MB. In our test, a 4000 x 3000 px (12 MP) JPG of 2.5 MB became a PNG of about 28 MB. That is over the 20 MB result limit, so the job fails with an "output too large" message. Choose JPEG or WebP as the target, or use a smaller picture.

JPG to PNG from code

The API takes one image per request. Send the raw image bytes as the body, not JSON or multipart form data. Use POST to https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/image-jobs with the query string op=image_convert&format=png, and set Content-Type to image/jpeg.

Authenticate with Authorization: Bearer followed by your API key, or with the x-api-key header. The response is 202 with a job_id. Poll GET /v1/jobs/:id until the status is succeeded, failed or timeout, then download the file from the short-lived download_url. The page shows a ready cURL, Node and Python example below the tool.

Privacy: what happens to your file

Your uploaded image is used only to make the converted file. It is deleted as soon as the job ends, whether the job succeeds or fails. The converted file is kept for 10 minutes in the free web tool, and no history is kept.

Download links are short-lived, so save the file once you have it. Only upload images you have the right to use. The Acceptable Use Policy explains the rules.

If you need the reverse, use the PNG to JPG tool to make a JPEG from a PNG. For a smaller file than the PNG, try the PNG to WebP tool, or the WebP to PNG tool if you have a WebP file that some programs do not accept.

If you want vector paths instead of a raster file, the JPG to SVG and PNG to SVG tools trace a picture into vector shapes. To turn an SVG drawing into a PNG, use the SVG to PNG tool.

Questions

Can I convert JPG to PNG for free?

Yes. The free web tool converts JPG to PNG without an account, and you can convert 30 images per day per visitor. You can change JPG to PNG as often as the daily limit allows.

Does JPG to PNG improve the quality?

No. The PNG keeps the pixels of the JPG exactly, but the detail the JPG already lost does not return.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the JPG?

PNG is lossless and JPEG is lossy, so PNG has to keep every pixel. For photographs, the PNG is often many times larger.

Does the PNG have a transparent background?

No. A JPG has no transparent areas, so the PNG has none. This tool does not remove backgrounds.

Is JPG to PNG lossless?

The PNG part is lossless, meaning it stores the decoded pixels without further loss. The JPG you start with was already lossy, so the result is not the original photo.

Will the image get smaller in pixels?

No. The tool never resizes or crops, so the width and height in pixels stay the same.

Is JPG the same as JPEG?

Yes, they are the same format. The tool lists it as JPEG, and the downloaded file has the .jpg extension.

Can I convert JPEG to PNG here?

Yes. A JPEG file works the same way as a JPG file in the tool, with the same limits.

What happens to my phone photo's orientation and location tags?

A rotated phone photo is turned upright in the result. Camera and location tags, such as EXIF and GPS data, are not copied into the PNG.

How big can the JPG be?

In the free tool, each image can be up to 5 MB. Signed-in users can convert images up to 10 MB. Results over 20 MB fail with an "output too large" message.

How long is my file kept?

The converted file is kept for 10 minutes in the free web tool. Your uploaded image is deleted as soon as the job ends.

Can I convert JPG to PNG in code?

Yes. The API accepts the raw image bytes at POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/image-jobs with op=image_convert and format=png, and the page shows a ready cURL, Node and Python example below the tool.

Need this in your app or in bulk?

This tool runs on the same platform as the API, so the same image is one HTTP request from your code. A free account includes 100 credits a month.
