GIF to PNG: Convert Your GIF for Free
Use this free GIF to PNG tool to turn a GIF picture into a PNG file online. You can also convert GIF into PNG for transparent logos. The default is Convert to PNG (lossless). If your GIF is animated, only the first frame is converted, so read the notes below before you start.
- Only the first frame of an animated GIF is converted. The result is one still PNG, not an animated PNG.
- Results vary by picture. A PNG can be larger than the GIF it came from.
- The tool handles one image at a time.

No account needed
30 images per day for free, no watermark.
Original size by default
The image is re-encoded at its full pixel size unless you choose Make smaller. Camera and location tags are not copied into the result.
Deleted automatically
Web tool results are removed after 10 minutes.
Privacy: what you submit is used only to make this file. The working copy is deleted when the job ends, the result after 10 minutes. See the privacy policy.
Do this from your code
The same request, built from the input and options above. Create an account to get an API key.
curl -X POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/render \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $AIIPWORLD_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"html":"","output":"pdf","options":{}}'
# returns {"job_id": "...", "status": "queued"}; then poll:
curl https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/jobs/JOB_ID -H "Authorization: Bearer $AIIPWORLD_API_KEY"Batches
The web tool handles 1 image at a time. The API takes one request per image, so you can script as many as your plan allows.
Retention
Web-tool results are kept 10 minutes; free API results 1 day; Starter and Pro results 7 days; Business 30 days. The web tool allows 10 conversions per minute and 50 per day per visitor.
In one sentence
A free online tool that converts a GIF to a PNG using only its first frame, keeping transparency, with an optional smaller size.
Key facts
- Input: GIF, PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, BMP or TIFF, up to 5 MB in the free tool and 10 MB when signed in, and up to 16 MP (4096 x 4096); the type is read from the file content, and HEIC, SVG, PDF and camera RAW files are not accepted.
- Only the first frame of an animated GIF is converted to PNG; the result is one still PNG, not an animated PNG, and you cannot pick another frame (WebP output or the GIF compressor keeps the animation). Transparency is kept by default, and a GIF has at most 256 colours, which conversion does not change.
- In our test a generated transparent logo GIF of 1024 x 1024 px and 14 KB became a 31 KB PNG with the transparency kept; the test pictures were generated by our scripts.
- The upload is deleted when the job ends and the result after 10 minutes; signed-in users pay 1 credit per image.
- Free without an account: up to 10 conversions per minute and 50 per day per visitor, no watermark. Signed in, each render costs 1 credit (100 free credits every month).
- Files are deleted automatically: 10 minutes after conversion without an account, 1 day with a free account.
- Developers can run the same render with POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/render and an API key (see the API docs page).
How it works
- Upload one GIF file using the upload area above.
- Check the preview and the image size that the tool shows before you convert.
- Keep "PNG" under "Convert to" for a lossless result, or pick JPEG or WebP.
- Leave "Keep transparency" on if your GIF has transparent areas.
- Click Convert to PNG and download the file from the result panel.
Example output
How to convert GIF to PNG
Upload your GIF, check the preview, and press the convert button. The tool reads the file and gives you a PNG to download. It takes a few clicks, and normal use needs no account.
Keep PNG selected for a lossless result. The file is saved with every pixel kept.
- Upload one GIF at a time.
- Choose PNG under "Convert to".
- Download the result from the panel.
What GIF to PNG conversion does
GIF to PNG conversion changes the file format and keeps the picture's pixels. The width and height stay the same, unless you use the optional Size setting to make the image smaller. The tool does not write GIF files.
A GIF has at most 256 colours. The conversion does not add colours or remove dithering that is already in the GIF. PNG stores the pixels without further loss.
Animated GIF: only the first frame
Only the first frame of an animated GIF is converted. The result panel says "Only the first of N frames was used". The animation is lost, and there is no frame picker on this page.
In a test, a 3-frame 480 x 360 animated GIF of 45 KB became one 480 x 360 PNG of 17 KB. A PNG cannot hold the animation. To keep every frame, choose WebP under Convert to, or use the GIF compressor or the GIF resizer.
Transparency stays transparent
"Keep transparency" is on by default. A transparent GIF becomes a PNG that keeps its transparency. If you turn the option off, transparent areas are filled with the background colour, which is white by default.
In a test, a transparent 1024 x 1024 GIF logo of 14 KB became a 31 KB PNG that kept its transparency. A GIF only has on or off transparency, so the edges stay as hard as they were. Conversion does not smooth them.
Why people convert GIF to PNG
Some people convert GIF to PNG to get a still image in a format with higher colour depth. MDN notes that PNG uses lossless compression and supports higher colour depths than GIF, and it advises PNG for lossless and indexed still images.
People also convert when a site or app asks for PNG files. Use this tool when you need a still PNG from a GIF.
What PNG does not fix
PNG does not add detail that the GIF never had. It does not remove banding or dithering that is already in the GIF. A poor GIF will still look poor as a PNG.
PNG also does not make the picture smaller in every case. Keep your original GIF if you need it.
GIF to PNG: file size
The PNG can be larger than the GIF. In the logo test the file grew from 14 KB to 31 KB. GIF and PNG compress pictures differently, so the size can go either way.
Do not expect a fixed result. File size depends on the picture. Compare the two files in the result panel after each conversion.
GIF to PNG or GIF to JPG
PNG keeps transparency and is lossless. JPEG has no transparency, so transparent areas are always filled with the background colour. If you need transparency, choose PNG.
JPEG and WebP are also listed under "Convert to". Pick the format that fits your use.
Making the PNG smaller in pixels
The optional Size setting can make the image smaller by percent, by longest side, or by box. It never enlarges the picture. Leave Size off to keep the original width and height.
Use a smaller size only when you need smaller pixel dimensions.
Which files the converter accepts
The tool accepts PNG, JPG (also .jpeg and .jfif), WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP and TIFF. It does not accept SVG, PDF, HEIC/HEIF, BigTIFF or camera RAW files. The file type is read from the file content, not the file name.
The free web tool accepts up to 5 MB per image and up to 16 MP (4096 x 4096) per image. Signed-in users can upload up to 10 MB per image. Each visitor can convert 30 images per day without an account. Signed-in users pay 1 credit per image, plus 1 credit for each 5 MB of result after the first 5 MB. If the result is larger than 20 MB, the job fails with an "output too large" message.
GIF to PNG from code
Use the image conversion API to convert GIF to PNG from code. Send the raw image bytes as the request body, not JSON or multipart. Set Content-Type to image/gif and send your API key in the Authorization header as a Bearer token, or in the x-api-key header.
Set op to image_convert and format to png. The API returns a job ID, so poll the job until it succeeds or fails, then download the file from the short-lived link. The API takes one request per image. The page shows ready cURL, Node and Python examples below the tool. See the image convert section of the API docs.
Privacy: what happens to your file
Your image is sent to our server, where it is processed with ordinary image software, not artificial intelligence. The uploaded image is used only to make the result. It is deleted as soon as the job ends, whether it succeeds or fails.
The result is deleted after 10 minutes in the free web tool. No history is kept, and download links are short-lived. You must have the right to use the image you upload.
