AVIF to PNG: Convert Your AVIF for Free
AVIF to PNG conversion turns an AVIF picture into a PNG file that more apps accept. This page converts your AVIF file to PNG with transparency kept by default. Use it when you need a PNG copy of an AVIF image for editing, design work or a site that does not accept AVIF.
- The tool reads AVIF as input only. It cannot save AVIF files.
- An animated AVIF is converted from its first frame only.
- The PNG is larger than the AVIF in most cases, and results vary by picture.

Your PNG will appear here.
The free web tool takes images up to 5 MB, 30 per day. Signed in, the limit is 10 MB. The image keeps its pixel size unless you choose Make smaller.
Retention: web-tool results are deleted after 10 minutes and no history is kept. API results are kept 1 day on the free plan and 7 days on Starter and Pro (30 days on Business).
No account needed
30 images per day for free, no watermark.
Original size by default
The image is re-encoded at its full pixel size unless you choose Make smaller. Camera and location tags are not copied into the result.
Deleted automatically
Web tool results are removed after 10 minutes.
Privacy: what you submit is used only to make this file. The working copy is deleted when the job ends, the result after 10 minutes. See the privacy policy.
Do this from your code
The same request, built from the input and options above. Create an account to get an API key.
curl -X POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/render \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $AIIPWORLD_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"html":"","output":"pdf","options":{}}'
# returns {"job_id": "...", "status": "queued"}; then poll:
curl https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/jobs/JOB_ID -H "Authorization: Bearer $AIIPWORLD_API_KEY"Batches
The web tool handles 1 image at a time. The API takes one request per image, so you can script as many as your plan allows.
Retention
Web-tool results are kept 10 minutes; free API results 1 day; Starter and Pro results 7 days; Business 30 days. The web tool allows 10 conversions per minute and 50 per day per visitor.
In one sentence
A free online tool that converts an AVIF image to PNG, keeping transparency, with an optional smaller size.
Key facts
- Input: AVIF, PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, BMP or TIFF, up to 5 MB in the free tool and 10 MB when signed in, and up to 16 MP (4096 x 4096); the type is read from the file content, and HEIC, SVG, PDF and camera RAW files are not accepted. The tool reads AVIF but cannot save it.
- Output: a PNG with the same width and height unless you choose a smaller size; transparency is kept by default; an animated AVIF is converted from its first frame. The PNG cannot bring back detail the lossy AVIF already dropped, and it is much larger.
- In our test a generated transparent logo AVIF of 10 KB became an 86 KB PNG, and a 1600 x 1200 px photograph AVIF of 179 KB became a 4.5 MB PNG; the test pictures were generated by our scripts.
- The upload is deleted when the job ends and the result after 10 minutes; signed-in users pay 1 credit per image.
- Free without an account: up to 10 conversions per minute and 50 per day per visitor, no watermark. Signed in, each render costs 1 credit (100 free credits every month).
- Files are deleted automatically: 10 minutes after conversion without an account, 1 day with a free account.
- Developers can run the same render with POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/render and an API key (see the API docs page).
How it works
- Choose your AVIF file with the upload button.
- The browser checks the type, size and pixel count before upload.
- Check the preview and the image size shown before you start.
- Leave "Convert to" set to PNG, or change Keep transparency and Background colour if you need them.
- Start the conversion and download the PNG from the result panel.
Example output
How to convert AVIF to PNG
Start with the AVIF file you want to change. Open the tool above, choose the file and let the browser run its checks. The default target is PNG, so the output keeps the transparency and pixels of your picture.
When the job finishes, the result panel shows the new file size. Download the PNG from there. If you need a different format, pick JPEG or WebP in the "Convert to" list instead.
- Default target: PNG, lossless, transparency kept.
- Other targets: JPEG or WebP.
What AVIF to PNG conversion does
This tool decodes an AVIF picture and writes it as a PNG file. It uses the same converter as the other converter pages, with PNG set as the target. AVIF is read as input only, so the tool never writes AVIF output.
The PNG stores the decoded pixels without adding further loss. The pixel size stays the same unless you choose a smaller size setting.
- Input: AVIF.
- Output: PNG, with JPEG and WebP also available.
Why people convert AVIF to PNG
Some editors, older apps and upload forms still do not handle AVIF well. A PNG copy can open where the AVIF file will not. MDN notes that AVIF support "is not yet comprehensive" and advises a fallback for that reason.
PNG is also useful when you need exact pixels. MDN says PNG is preferred over JPEG "for more precise reproduction of source images, or when transparency is needed". Use an AVIF to PNG converter when that matters for your work.
- Editing in tools that do not open AVIF.
- Uploading to forms that accept PNG only.
Transparency stays transparent
Transparency is kept in the PNG by default. The Keep transparency setting is on when you open the tool. If you turn it off, transparent areas are filled with the background colour, which is white (#ffffff) by default.
JPEG has no transparency, so JPEG output always fills those areas. PNG keeps the alpha channel when the setting is on.
- Keep transparency on: alpha channel stays in the PNG.
- Keep transparency off: background colour fills the area.
AVIF to PNG: file size
The PNG is usually much larger than the AVIF. In our test, a transparent 1024 x 1024 logo AVIF of 10 KB became an 86 KB PNG with transparency kept. The same logo became a 74 KB PNG when transparency was turned off and filled with white.
A generated 1600 x 1200 test photograph AVIF of 179 KB became a 4,576 KB PNG. The same picture saved as a JPG at quality 80 was 232 KB. Results vary by picture.
- Logo test: 10 KB AVIF, 86 KB PNG.
- Photo test: 179 KB AVIF, 4,576 KB PNG.
What PNG cannot fix
A PNG copy stores the decoded picture exactly, but it cannot bring back detail that the lossy AVIF already discarded. It also does not make the picture sharper. The quality of the PNG is limited by the quality of the original AVIF.
If you need a smaller file, the PNG is the wrong choice. A lossy format can keep the picture much smaller, and you can compare outputs before you pick one.
- Lost detail stays lost.
- Sharpness is not added.
AVIF to PNG or AVIF to JPG
Pick PNG when you need transparency or exact pixels. Pick JPG when you need a small file and the picture has no transparency. The AVIF to JPG page is the sibling tool for that case.
In our test, a photograph saved as a JPG at quality 80 was 232 KB, while the PNG was 4,576 KB. MDN says lossy AVIF images are around 50% smaller than JPEG at visually similar levels.
- Need transparency: use PNG here.
- Need a small file without transparency: use the AVIF to JPG page.
Animated AVIF and HEIC files
An animated AVIF is read from its first frame only. The result is a still PNG, not an animated PNG (APNG). If you need the other frames, extract them with a different tool before you convert.
HEIC and HEIF files are not accepted. These are often iPhone photos. Convert them to a supported format before you use this page.
- Animated AVIF: first frame only.
- HEIC and HEIF: not accepted.
Make the PNG smaller in pixels
The pixel size does not change by default. The optional Size setting can make the picture smaller by percent, by longest side or by box. It never enlarges the picture.
Use Size when you need smaller pixel dimensions for a web page or a layout. The file size will drop as the pixel count drops. Keep the original size if you need to print or edit at full resolution.
- Size options: percent, longest side or box.
- Size never enlarges the picture.
Which files the converter accepts
The tool accepts PNG, JPG (also .jpeg and .jfif), WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP and TIFF. It does not accept SVG, PDF, HEIC/HEIF, BigTIFF or camera RAW files. The file type is read from the content, not the file name.
The free web tool accepts up to 5 MB per image and up to 16 MP (4096 x 4096) per image. Signed-in users can convert up to 10 MB per image. Anonymous use is limited to 30 images per day per visitor. Signed-in users pay 1 credit per image, plus 1 credit for each 5 MB of result after the first 5 MB. A result larger than 20 MB fails with an "output too large" message.
- Free web tool: 5 MB per image, 30 images per day.
- Signed-in users: 10 MB per image, 1 credit per image.
AVIF to PNG from code
You can run the same conversion through the API. Send a POST request to https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/image-jobs with the raw image bytes as the body, not JSON or multipart. Set Content-Type to image/avif and authenticate with Authorization: Bearer <API key> or x-api-key.
Use op=image_convert with format=png. Other settings include quality, lossless, keep_transparency and background. The API returns a job_id, and you poll GET /v1/jobs/:id until the job succeeds or fails. The API takes one request per image, and there is no batch endpoint and no webhooks yet. This page shows a ready cURL, Node and Python example below the tool. See /docs/#image-convert for the full list of settings.
- Endpoint: POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/image-jobs.
- Operation: op=image_convert, format=png.
Privacy: what happens to your file
Your image is sent to our server. It is not processed in the browser. The processing uses sharp (Apache-2.0), built on the libvips library, which is ordinary image processing and not artificial intelligence.
The uploaded image is used only to make the result. It is deleted as soon as the job ends, whether it succeeds or fails. The result is deleted after 10 minutes in the free web tool, and no history is kept. Download links are short-lived. Camera and location tags are not copied into the result. You must have the right to use the image you upload, as the Acceptable Use Policy requires.
- Upload deleted when the job ends.
- Result deleted after 10 minutes.
Questions
Can I convert AVIF to PNG for free?
Yes, the free web tool converts AVIF to PNG without an account, within the daily limit for anonymous visitors. Anonymous use needs a quick human check, and signed-in users skip it and use credits.
Is the transparency kept?
Yes, transparency is kept in the PNG by default when Keep transparency is on. If you turn it off, transparent areas are filled with the background colour, which is white by default.
Why is my PNG so much bigger than the AVIF?
PNG stores the decoded pixels without lossy compression, while AVIF is a lossy format. In our test, a 179 KB AVIF photo became a 4,576 KB PNG, and results vary by picture.
Is AVIF to PNG lossless?
The PNG is lossless relative to the decoded picture, so it adds no further loss. It cannot restore detail that the original AVIF already discarded.
Does the PNG look better than the AVIF?
No, the PNG does not look sharper or better than the AVIF. It keeps the decoded pixels exactly, so the quality matches the original AVIF.
What happens to an animated AVIF?
An animated AVIF is converted from its first frame only. The result is a still PNG, not an animated PNG.
Can I convert HEIC files?
No, HEIC and HEIF files are not accepted by this tool. Convert them to a supported format such as PNG or JPG first.
Can I convert AVIF to JPG or WebP instead?
Yes, the "Convert to" list also offers JPEG and WebP. The AVIF to JPG page is the sibling tool for a smaller file.
Will the picture change size?
No, the pixel size stays the same by default. The optional Size setting can make it smaller, and it never enlarges the picture.
Can the tool save AVIF files?
No, the tool reads AVIF as input only and cannot save AVIF output.
Does the tool accept a file with the .avif extension?
Yes. A .avif to PNG conversion works like any other: the tool reads the file content, so a renamed file is read as what it really is.
How long is my file kept?
Your uploaded image is deleted as soon as the job ends. The result is deleted after 10 minutes in the free web tool.
Can I convert AVIF to PNG in code?
Yes, the API accepts the raw AVIF bytes with op=image_convert and format=png. The page shows a ready cURL, Node and Python example below the tool.
Need this in your app or in bulk?
This tool runs on the same platform as the API, so the same image is one HTTP request from your code. A free account includes 100 credits a month.
