WebP to GIF Converter

WebP to GIF conversion takes a WebP picture and writes a GIF file. Animated WebP files keep every frame, each frame's delay and the loop count. Still WebP pictures become one-frame GIFs. You can use this tool without an account, within the daily limit.

  • A GIF has at most 256 colours and no partly see-through pixels. Photographs can look grainy.
  • Results vary with the picture. Sizes in these notes were measured on a generated test animation, not real footage.
  • Download links are short-lived. Save the file once the job finishes.

PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP or TIFF, up to 5 MB

A GIF has at most 256 colours. Transparency is on or off, with no partly see-through pixels, so edges can look rough. An animated GIF or WebP keeps its animation.

Complete the human check to enable the button.

Result

Your GIF will appear here.

The free web tool takes images up to 5 MB, 30 per day. Signed in, the limit is 10 MB.

Retention: web-tool results are deleted after 10 minutes and no history is kept. API results are kept 1 day on the free plan and 7 days on Starter and Pro (30 days on Business).

  • No account needed

30 images per day for free, no watermark.

  • Original size by default

The image is re-encoded at its full pixel size unless you choose Make smaller. Camera and location tags are not copied into the result.

  • Deleted automatically

Web tool results are removed after 10 minutes.

Privacy: what you submit is used only to make this file. The working copy is deleted when the job ends, the result after 10 minutes. See the privacy policy.

Do this from your code

The same request, built from the input and options above. Create an account to get an API key.

curl -X POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/render \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $AIIPWORLD_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"html":"","output":"pdf","options":{}}'

# returns {"job_id": "...", "status": "queued"}; then poll:
curl https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/jobs/JOB_ID -H "Authorization: Bearer $AIIPWORLD_API_KEY"

Batches

The web tool handles 1 image at a time. The API takes one request per image, so you can script as many as your plan allows.

Retention

Web-tool results are kept 10 minutes; free API results 1 day; Starter and Pro results 7 days; Business 30 days. The web tool allows 10 conversions per minute and 50 per day per visitor.

In one sentence

A free online tool that converts a WebP picture to GIF, keeping every frame, frame delay and the loop count of an animated WebP, with GIF limited to 256 colours.

Key facts

  • Input: WebP (also PNG, JPG, AVIF, GIF, BMP or TIFF), up to 5 MB in the free tool and 10 MB when signed in, and up to 16 MP (4096 x 4096) per frame; the type is read from the file content.
  • Output: a GIF with the same width and height; an animated WebP keeps its frames, delays and loop count, a still WebP becomes a one-frame GIF. A GIF has at most 256 colours and on/off transparency, so photographs can look grainy and soft edges rough.
  • Animation limits: up to 300 frames and 64 MP in total when signed in, 100 frames and 16 MP without an account; turning off Keep the animation (animate=false in the API) uses only the first frame.
  • In our test a generated 24-frame animated WebP of 320 x 240 px and 58 KB became a 250 KB GIF with the same 24 frames and 1.9 s; the test animation was generated by our scripts and results vary.
  • The upload is deleted when the job ends and the result after 10 minutes; signed-in users pay 1 credit per image plus 1 credit for each started 10 MP of frames beyond the first 10 MP.
  • Free without an account: up to 10 conversions per minute and 50 per day per visitor, no watermark. Signed in, each render costs 1 credit (100 free credits every month).
  • Files are deleted automatically: 10 minutes after conversion without an account, 1 day with a free account.
  • Developers can run the same render with POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/render and an API key (see the API docs page).

How it works

  1. Choose your WebP file in the tool above.
  2. Check the preview. For an animated file, the page reads the frame count and warns you if the animation is over the limits.
  3. Leave "Convert to" set to GIF and keep "Keep the animation" on. These are the defaults.
  4. Start the conversion and wait for the result.
  5. Check the result panel for frames, total time, loop and sizes, then download the GIF.

Example output

Original animated WebP, 320 x 240 px, 24 frames, 58 KB

The sample animated WebP

Converted GIF, 24 frames, 250 KB

The sample animated WebP converted to an animated GIF
A generated animated WebP (320 x 240 px, 24 frames, 1.9 s, 58 KB) converted with Convert to GIF: a 250 KB GIF with all 24 frames, the same timing and a loop that runs forever. Converted by this site's own engine. Open the converted file (or select the picture) to see it at full size.

How to convert WebP to GIF

To convert webp to gif, open the tool, choose your file, and check the preview. The converter reads the file and writes a new GIF next to it. You do not need to change any setting for a normal conversion.

The default output is GIF, and "Keep the animation" is on. That means an animated WebP stays animated. If you want only one picture from the file, read the section on the first frame below.

Once the job ends, the result panel shows what the GIF contains. Compare the frame count and loop with your original before you use the file.

What WebP to GIF conversion does

A .webp to GIF conversion re-encodes each picture in the file as a GIF. The image is sent to our server and processed there with ordinary image tools, not artificial intelligence. The tool reads the real file type from the file content, not the name.

If your file name ends in .webp but the content is something else, the tool reads what the file really is. A text file or corrupt file renamed to an image extension is refused with an "unsupported image" message.

The converter page works the same way for other targets. Here the target is GIF, so the output is a GIF file with the frames and timing the source contains.

Animated WebP: frames, timing and loop

An animated WebP becomes an animated GIF with the same frames, frame delays and loop count. The result panel shows the result as "Animation: N frames, X s, loops forever" or "plays N times". The delay of each frame is kept as it is.

GIF delays are multiples of 10 ms. A frame delay of 0 or 1 hundredth of a second in the original is not changed. Browsers show that delay as 100 ms, so playback can look slower than the source.

In our test, a generated animated WebP of 320 x 240 px with 24 frames of 80 ms (1.9 s) and a loop forever was kept as 24 frames, 1.9 s, looping forever. The same file with a loop count of 3 gave a GIF that plays 3 times.

Still WebP to GIF

A WebP that is not animated becomes a still GIF with one frame. Use this when a program, chat app, form or website asks for a GIF file and you have a still picture in WebP.

The result panel shows no animation line. Other settings work the same way as for animated files.

Results vary with the picture. A photograph with many colours will look different from a flat graphic after conversion.

256 colours and dithering

A GIF pixel is an index into a palette of at most 256 colours. A WebP picture can use far more colours, so the GIF may look rougher, especially in photographs and smooth gradients. This is a property of the GIF format.

Full-colour images converted to GIF can show unsatisfactory dithering. Dithering is the pattern used to suggest colours the palette does not hold. If you need to adjust colours or dithering, use the compressor page, where GIF output offers colour and dithering settings.

The converter page does not offer a colour count setting for GIF output.

Transparency in a GIF

A GIF pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque. It has no partly see-through pixels. A WebP with soft edges or semi-transparent areas gets rough edges when saved as GIF.

Transparency is kept when "Keep transparency" is on. In our test, a transparent animated WebP sticker of 256 x 256 px with 20 frames of 70 ms (1.4 s) was converted with transparency kept. The result was 74 KB.

With "Keep transparency" off and a white background, the same sticker became 89 KB. The panel says the transparency was filled.

WebP to GIF: file size

A GIF is usually bigger than the WebP it came from. In our test, a generated animated WebP of 320 x 240 px with 24 frames was 58 KB at lossy quality 80. As a GIF it was 250 KB, about 4 times bigger.

The size difference comes from the formats. GIF and WebP compress pictures in different ways, and a lossy WebP can be much smaller. Shorter animations and smaller pixel sizes give smaller GIFs.

Results vary with the picture. Check the "original and result size" lines in the result panel for your own file.

If you only need the first frame

Turn off "Keep the animation" to keep only the first frame. The result is a one-frame GIF. In our test, a 320 x 240 px animated WebP gave a one-frame GIF of 23 KB.

The result panel says "Only the first of N frames was used". This is the expected result for this setting, not an error.

Choosing PNG as the output also keeps only the first frame. In our test, the first frame as a PNG was 31 KB.

Limits for animations

An animation is limited by frames and by total pixels. Total pixels means frame width x frame height x number of frames. Signed in, you can convert up to 300 frames and 64 MP in total. Without an account, the limit is 100 frames and 16 MP in total.

The check is made from the file header before the frames are decoded. An animation over the limit fails with an "animation_too_large" message and the page suggests using only the first frame. Your credits are returned.

If you untick "Keep the animation", or use animate=false in the API, only the first frame is used. Each single frame is still limited to 16 MP (4096 x 4096). Signed-in users pay 1 credit per image, plus 1 credit for each started 10 megapixels of decoded frames beyond the first 10 megapixels, and 1 credit for each 5 MB of result after the first 5 MB.

WebP to GIF or WebP to PNG

Choose GIF when a program, chat app, form or website asks for a GIF file, or when you need an animated result in GIF. The GIF keeps frames, delays and loop count from an animated WebP.

Choose PNG when you need one still picture with full colour and the alpha channel kept. PNG output only uses the first frame of an animation.

If you are not sure which target a site needs, check what the site asks for before you convert.

Which files the converter accepts

The converter accepts PNG, JPG (also .jpeg and .jfif), WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP and TIFF. It does not accept SVG, PDF, HEIC/HEIF, BigTIFF or camera RAW files.

The free web tool accepts up to 5 MB per image. Signed-in users can convert up to 10 MB per image. Each image may be up to 16 MP (4096 x 4096) per frame.

Without an account, you can convert 30 images per day per visitor. Results are limited to 20 MB. If the result would be larger than 20 MB, the job fails with an "output too large" message instead of returning a cut-off file.

WebP to GIF from code

You can send WebP to GIF jobs from code with the API. Send the raw image bytes as the request body, not JSON or multipart. Use the endpoint POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/image-jobs with Content-Type image/webp.

Set op=image_convert and format=gif. The animate setting defaults to true. Settings go in the query string, and unknown names are rejected. For animations, send timeout_sec=60 (the maximum is 60).

Authenticate with Authorization: Bearer followed by your API key, or with x-api-key. The response is 202 with a job_id. Poll GET /v1/jobs/:id until the job succeeds, fails or times out. The download_url is a short-lived signed link. Once you choose an animation, the page shows a ready cURL, Node and Python example below the tool.

Privacy: what happens to your file

Your image is sent to our server to make the result. It is not processed in the browser. You must have the right to use what you upload, as set out in the Acceptable Use Policy.

The uploaded image is used only to make the result. It is deleted as soon as the job ends, whether it succeeds or fails. No history is kept.

The result is deleted after 10 minutes in the free web tool. Download your GIF before then.

Questions

Can I convert WebP to GIF for free?

Yes. You can convert without an account, up to 30 images per day per visitor.

Does the GIF keep the animation?

Yes, when "Keep the animation" is on, which is the default. Every frame, each frame's delay and the loop count are kept.

Will the GIF have the same speed?

Usually yes. Frame delays are kept as they are, but GIF delays are multiples of 10 ms. A delay of 0 or 1 hundredth of a second is shown as 100 ms by browsers.

Why is my GIF so much bigger than the WebP?

GIF and WebP compress pictures in different ways, and GIF holds at most 256 colours. In our test, a 58 KB animated WebP became a 250 KB GIF. Results vary with the picture.

How many colours does the GIF have?

A GIF has at most 256 colours. The palette is the set of colours the picture can use.

What happens to transparency?

A GIF pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque. Transparency is kept when "Keep transparency" is on. With it off and a white background, the transparent areas are filled.

Can I convert a WebP that is not animated?

Yes. A still WebP becomes a one-frame GIF, and the result panel shows no animation line.

Can I get just the first frame?

Yes. Turn off "Keep the animation" to use only the first frame. The result panel says "Only the first of N frames was used".

Why was my WebP refused as too long or too large?

The animation may be over the frame or total pixel limit. Signed in, the limits are 300 frames and 64 MP in total. Without an account they are 100 frames and 16 MP in total. Files over 5 MB per image are also refused on the free web tool.

Can I convert WebP to PNG or JPG instead?

Yes. PNG, JPEG and WebP are all in the "Convert to" list. PNG and JPEG output use only the first frame of an animation.

How long is my file kept?

The result is deleted after 10 minutes in the free web tool. Your uploaded image is deleted as soon as the job ends.

Can I convert WebP to GIF in code?

Yes. Use POST to the image-jobs endpoint with the raw image bytes, op=image_convert and format=gif. For animations, send timeout_sec=60.

Need this in your app or in bulk?

This tool runs on the same platform as the API, so the same image is one HTTP request from your code. A free account includes 100 credits a month.
