GIF Resizer: Resize Animated and Still GIFs Online
The GIF Resizer makes a GIF smaller in pixels and keeps the animation. Upload one image, pick a size, and download the result. You can resize a GIF by percent, by longest side, or by width and height. The tool does not make a GIF larger.
- The tool only makes a picture smaller. A size larger than the original keeps the original size.
- Results vary with the picture. Sizes on this page were measured on a generated test animation, not real footage.
- Only the first frame is kept when you save as PNG or JPEG, or when Keep the animation is off.
Drop an image here
PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP or TIFF, up to 5 MB
The picture is only ever made smaller, never larger: one already below this size keeps its size. The credit cost is the same as a plain conversion.
A GIF has at most 256 colours. Transparency is on or off, with no partly see-through pixels, so edges can look rough. An animated GIF or WebP keeps its animation.

Result
Your GIF will appear here.
The free web tool takes images up to 5 MB, 30 per day. Signed in, the limit is 10 MB.
Retention: web-tool results are deleted after 10 minutes and no history is kept. API results are kept 1 day on the free plan and 7 days on Starter and Pro (30 days on Business).
No account needed
30 images per day for free, no watermark.
Original size by default
The image is re-encoded at its full pixel size unless you choose Make smaller. Camera and location tags are not copied into the result.
Deleted automatically
Web tool results are removed after 10 minutes.
Privacy: what you submit is used only to make this file. The working copy is deleted when the job ends, the result after 10 minutes. See the privacy policy.
Do this from your code
The same request, built from the input and options above. Create an account to get an API key.
curl -X POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/render \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $AIIPWORLD_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"html":"","output":"pdf","options":{}}'
# returns {"job_id": "...", "status": "queued"}; then poll:
curl https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/jobs/JOB_ID -H "Authorization: Bearer $AIIPWORLD_API_KEY"Batches
The web tool handles 1 image at a time. The API takes one request per image, so you can script as many as your plan allows.
Retention
Web-tool results are kept 10 minutes; free API results 1 day; Starter and Pro results 7 days; Business 30 days. The web tool allows 10 conversions per minute and 50 per day per visitor.
In one sentence
A free online tool that makes an animated or still GIF smaller in pixels by percent, longest side or width and height, keeping every frame, delay and the loop count; it never enlarges a picture.
Key facts
- Input: GIF (also animated WebP, PNG, JPG, AVIF, BMP or TIFF), up to 5 MB in the free tool and 10 MB when signed in, and up to 16 MP (4096 x 4096) per frame; the type is read from the file content.
- Output: a GIF by default (or animated WebP, PNG or JPEG; PNG and JPEG hold only the first frame) at the new size, with the proportions kept; a picture already smaller than the size asked for keeps its size and the result panel says so.
- Animation limits: up to 300 frames and 64 MP in total when signed in, 100 frames and 16 MP without an account; turning off Keep the animation (animate=false in the API) uses only the first frame.
- In our test a generated 30-frame GIF of 480 x 360 px and 132 KB became a 240 x 180 px GIF of 105 KB at 50 percent, with the same 30 frames and 1.8 s; the test animation was generated by our scripts and results vary.
- The upload is deleted when the job ends and the result after 10 minutes; signed-in users pay 1 credit per image plus 1 credit for each started 10 MP of frames beyond the first 10 MP.
- Free without an account: up to 10 conversions per minute and 50 per day per visitor, no watermark. Signed in, each render costs 1 credit (100 free credits every month).
- Files are deleted automatically: 10 minutes after conversion without an account, 1 day with a free account.
- Developers can run the same render with POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/render and an API key (see the API docs page).
How it works
- Upload one GIF, or another accepted image, to the tool.
- Check the preview. For an animated GIF, the page shows the number of frames.
- Choose a size: 50 percent of the original is the default, or set a percent, a longest side, or a width and/or height box.
- Leave Save as GIF and Keep the animation on, or change them if you need another format.
- Run the resize and download the result. Check the result panel for frames, time, loop and size.
Example output
How to resize a GIF
Open the GIF Resizer and upload your GIF. The tool reads the file and shows a preview before you run it. Then choose how you want to set the new size and run the resize. The default is 50 percent of the original, saved as a GIF.
Check the result panel after the job ends. It shows the new pixel size, the file size and the animation details. If the result is not the size you want, change the setting and run it again.
What a GIF resizer does here
This GIF Resizer changes the pixel size of each frame with the same filter. The frame count, the delay of each frame and the loop count stay the same. You get a smaller picture that plays the same way as the original.
The tool does not crop, stretch or remove frames. It works on one image at a time. Use it to resize animated GIF files, to change size of GIF files for a web page or a message, or as a plain animated GIF resizer. If you need to change the file size in bytes further, use the GIF compressor after you resize.
Resize an animated GIF: frames, timing and loop
An animated GIF keeps all its frames when you resize it with Keep the animation on. Each frame keeps its own delay, and the loop setting stays as it was. The result panel shows the number of frames, the total time and whether the animation loops forever or plays a set number of times.
GIF delays are multiples of 10 ms. A frame delay of 0 or 1 hundredth of a second in the original is not changed, and browsers show it as 100 ms. Resizing does not speed up or slow down the animation.
- Frames: kept as they are.
- Frame delays: kept as they are.
- Loop count: kept as it is.
Percent, longest side or width and height
You can set the new size in three ways. Percent sets the size as a share of the original, from 1 to 100. Longest side sets the length of the longer edge in pixels. Width and/or height sets a box that the picture fits inside.
The picture keeps its proportions in every mode. For example, a 200 x 100 box on a 4:3 picture gives 133 x 100. In a test on a 480 x 360 animation, 50 percent gave 240 x 180 px, and a width of 200 gave 200 x 150 px.
Only smaller, never larger
The GIF Resizer cannot enlarge a GIF. If the picture is already smaller than the size you ask for, it keeps its size. The result panel then says that the picture was not resized.
In a test, a width of 800 on a 480 x 360 animation stayed at 480 x 360 px. If you need a bigger GIF, this tool will not produce one.
GIF resize: file size
Fewer pixels do not always mean a file that shrinks in the same proportion. In a test on a 480 x 360 animation of 132 KB, 50 percent gave 240 x 180 px at 105 KB. A width of 200 gave 86 KB, and a box of 200 x 100 gave 66 KB.
Results vary with each picture. A GIF with many colours or busy frames may shrink less than a simple one. The file size shown in the result panel is the size to check.
Resize first, then compress
Resizing and compressing are different steps. This tool changes the pixel size. The GIF compressor changes colours, dithering and frame loss to reduce bytes. Use the resizer first if the pixel size is too big, then use the compressor if the file is still too large.
The compressor does not change the pixel size. For GIF output, the lossless option keeps 256 colours and no frame loss. It re-optimises the file and can come out larger.
Save as GIF, WebP, PNG or JPEG
Save as GIF is the default and keeps the animation. Save as WebP makes an animated WebP. In a test, 50 percent saved as an animated WebP gave 42 KB with 30 frames.
PNG and JPEG hold only the first frame. In a test, 50 percent saved as PNG gave 8.4 KB with the first frame only. WebP and JPEG have a quality setting, which defaults to 80.
Transparency when you resize
A GIF pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque. It cannot be partly see-through. When you resize a transparent GIF, the transparent areas stay transparent while Keep transparency is on.
If you save a PNG or WebP with soft edges as a GIF, the edges may look rough. Check the preview and the result before you use the file.
Limits for animations
An animated GIF is checked from its file header before the frames are decoded. Signed in, the limit is 300 frames and 64 MP in total, where total is frame width x frame height x number of frames. Without an account, the limit is 100 frames and 16 MP in total.
Each single frame is still limited to 16 MP (4096 x 4096). If an animation is over the limit, the job fails with an animation_too_large message. The credits are returned. The base price covers the first 10 megapixels of animation, and each started 10 megapixels above that adds 1 credit when you are signed in.
- Unticking Keep the animation, or using animate=false in the API, keeps only the first frame.
- A GIF cut off before its end marker is refused as an unsupported image.
Which files the resizer accepts
The tool accepts PNG, JPG (also .jpeg and .jfif), WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP and TIFF. It does not accept SVG, PDF, HEIC/HEIF, BigTIFF or camera RAW files. The file type is read from the file content, not the file name.
Free web use allows up to 5 MB per image and 30 images per day for each visitor without an account. Signed-in users can upload up to 10 MB per image. Signed-in users pay 1 credit per image, plus any animation extra and 1 credit for each 5 MB of result after the first 5 MB. A result larger than 20 MB fails with an "output too large" message.
Resize GIF from code
The GIF resizer is also available through the API. Send a POST to https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/image-jobs with the raw image bytes as the body, not JSON or multipart. Set Content-Type to image/gif or image/webp, and use op=image_resize.
Set the size with scale, max_side, or width and/or height. Use format and animate to choose the output. For animations, send timeout_sec=60, which is the maximum. The page shows a ready cURL, Node and Python example below the tool, with timeout_sec=60 once an animation is chosen. Docs are at /docs/#image-resize.
Privacy: what happens to your file
The image is sent to our server and is not processed in the browser. It is used only to make the result and is deleted as soon as the job ends, whether it succeeds or fails. The result is deleted after 10 minutes in the free web tool, and no history is kept.
Download links are short-lived. You must have the right to use the image you upload, as set out in the Acceptable Use Policy.
Questions
Can I resize a GIF for free?
Yes, you can resize a GIF for free in the web tool, within the daily limit for visitors without an account.
Does the resized GIF still animate?
Yes, when Keep the animation is on and the output is GIF or WebP, every frame, its delay and the loop count are kept.
Can I make a GIF bigger?
No, the GIF Resizer only makes a picture smaller. A size larger than the original keeps the original size.
How do I resize a GIF to a width?
Choose the width and/or height option, enter the width, and run the resize. The picture keeps its proportions and fits inside the box.
Does resizing change the speed?
No, the frame delays are kept as they are, so the animation runs at the same speed.
Why is the resized GIF not much smaller in KB?
Fewer pixels do not always cut the file size in the same proportion. In a test, 50 percent cut the file from 132 KB to 105 KB, and results vary with each picture.
Can I resize a GIF and keep the proportions?
Yes, the picture keeps its proportions in every mode, including the width and height box.
Can I resize an animated WebP?
Animated WebP files are read by the tool, and you can save the result as an animated WebP or as a GIF.
What happens to a transparent GIF?
Transparent pixels stay transparent, since a GIF pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque.
Why was my GIF refused as too long or too large?
The animation is over the frame or total pixel limit, or the result is over 20 MB. Check the limits for your account type and try a smaller size.
How long is my file kept?
The result is deleted after 10 minutes in the free web tool, and the uploaded image is deleted when the job ends.
Can I resize GIF files in code?
Yes, use the image-jobs API with op=image_resize, and the docs show cURL, Node and Python examples.
Need this in your app or in bulk?
This tool runs on the same platform as the API, so the same image is one HTTP request from your code. A free account includes 100 credits a month.
