Flip Image Online

Flip Image online with our free tool: upload one picture, choose a direction, and download the flipped result. Use it as an image mirror to make a mirror image or an upside down image without installing software. You can flip a picture horizontally, vertically, or both ways, and you can save the result in the format you need.

  • The tool handles one picture per job. Anonymous use needs a human check (Cloudflare Turnstile).
  • A flip does not turn a picture. Use the Rotate Image tool to turn it.
  • Results vary with the picture. Our measurements were made on generated test pictures, not real photos.

Drop an image here

PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP or TIFF, up to 5 MB

Flipping moves the pixels without changing them. The size stays the same.

Same keeps the file type (a GIF stays a GIF; BMP and TIFF are saved as PNG, AVIF as WebP).

Complete the human check to enable the button.

Result

Your image will appear here.

The free web tool takes images up to 5 MB, 30 per day. Signed in, the limit is 10 MB. The image keeps its pixel size unless you choose Make smaller.

Retention: web-tool results are deleted after 10 minutes and no history is kept. API results are kept 1 day on the free plan and 7 days on Starter and Pro (30 days on Business and Scale).

  • No account needed

30 images per day for free, no watermark.

  • Only your edit is applied

The rest of the picture is left as it is. Camera and location tags (EXIF, GPS) are not written to the result.

  • Deleted automatically

Web tool results are removed after 10 minutes.

Privacy: what you submit is used only to make this file. The working copy is deleted when the job ends, the result after 10 minutes. See the privacy policy.

Do this from your code

The same edit as an API request: send the image bytes, then poll the job. It needs an API key; a free account can create one.

curl -X POST "https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/image-jobs?op=image_edit&action=flip&direction=horizontal" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $AIIPWORLD_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: image/png" \
  --data-binary @input.png

# returns {"job_id": "...", "status": "queued", "credits_reserved": 1}; then poll:
curl https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/jobs/JOB_ID -H "Authorization: Bearer $AIIPWORLD_API_KEY"

Batches

The web tool handles 1 image at a time. The API takes one request per image, so you can script as many as your plan allows.

Retention

Web-tool results are kept 10 minutes; free API results 1 day; Starter and Pro results 7 days; Business and Scale 30 days. The web tool allows 10 conversions per minute and 50 per day per visitor.

In one sentence

A free online tool that flips a picture horizontally (a mirror image), vertically (upside down) or both ways without changing its size, and saves it as PNG, JPEG, WebP or GIF.

Key facts

  • Input: one picture up to 5 MB in the free tool and 10 MB when signed in, and up to 16 MP (4096 x 4096); animated GIF and WebP are flipped frame by frame within the animation limits.
  • Settings: the direction (horizontal, vertical or both), save as the same type, PNG, JPEG, WebP or GIF, and quality for JPEG and WebP.
  • A flip moves the pixels without changing them; in our test a pixel of an 800 x 560 px picture moved from x 100 to x 699 with the same color, and the size stayed 800 x 560 px.
  • The upload is deleted when the job ends and the result after 10 minutes; signed-in users pay 1 credit per file plus 1 credit for each started 5 MB of result beyond the first 5 MB and, for an animation, 1 credit for each started 10 MP of frames beyond the first 10 MP.
  • Free without an account: up to 10 conversions per minute and 50 per day per visitor, no watermark. Signed in, each render costs 1 credit (100 free credits every month).
  • Files are deleted automatically: 10 minutes after conversion without an account, 1 day with a free account.
  • Developers can run the same job with POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/image-jobs?op=image_edit (the image as the request body, settings in the query string) and an API key (see the API docs page).

How it works

  1. Upload one picture. PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP and TIFF files are accepted.
  2. Choose a Flip direction: Horizontal, Vertical or Both.
  3. Pick a Save as format. Keep "Same as the original" or choose PNG, JPEG, WebP or GIF.
  4. Click Flip image and wait for the result panel.
  5. Check the flipped picture, then download it.

Example output

Original PNG, 800 x 560 px, 24 KB

The sample illustration before flipping

Flipped horizontally: PNG, 800 x 560 px, 21 KB

The sample illustration flipped horizontally, the house now on the right
A generated 800 x 560 px PNG illustration (24 KB: a red house, a green tree, a sun and a line of text on a sky) flipped horizontally and saved as PNG: 800 x 560 px, 21 KB. The house that stood on the left is now on the right and the text is mirrored. A pixel of the red house wall moved from x 100 to x 699 with the same color. Converted by this site's own engine. Open the converted file (or select the picture) to see it at full size.

How to Flip Image Files Online

Open the tool, upload your picture, and pick a direction. The flip is done on our server, and the result panel shows the flipped picture when the job ends. Most people use the default Horizontal setting first.

Check the result panel after each job. It shows the size, what was done, and the credits used.

Flip Horizontally to Make a Mirror Image

Horizontal is the default direction. It swaps the left and right sides of the picture, like a mirror. A mirror picture is what you get when you flip the image left to right.

In our test, an 800 x 560 px generated PNG illustration (24 KB) flipped horizontally stayed 800 x 560 px (PNG, 21 KB). The house that stood on the left moved to the right. Results vary with the picture.

Flip Image Vertically for an Upside Down Image

Vertical flip swaps the top and the bottom of the picture. Use it when you need an upside down image. The pixels move to their mirror position and none of them is changed.

In our test, a vertical flip of the same kind of picture gave 800 x 560 px, 21 KB. The picture keeps its size.

Flip Both Ways

Choose Both to flip the picture horizontally and vertically at once. The result is the same as turning the picture 180 degrees.

In our test, both flips gave 800 x 560 px, 21 KB. The picture size did not change.

Flipping Is Not the Same as Rotating

A flip makes a mirror image. A turn does not. A turned picture is never mirrored, so flipping and rotating give different results for the same picture.

To turn a picture by an angle, use the Rotate Image tool. This tool offers no flip by an angle and no flip of only part of the picture.

Choose the File Format

Keep "Same as the original" if you want the file type to stay the same. A GIF stays a GIF, BMP and TIFF are saved as PNG, and AVIF is saved as WebP.

PNG keeps every pixel. JPEG and WebP are lossy, so use a Quality value from 1 to 100. The default is 90. A flip does not create transparent areas, but saving a transparent PNG as JPEG fills the transparent areas with the background color, which is white unless you change it. The panel says so.

Flipping an Animated GIF or WebP

Every frame of an animated GIF or WebP is flipped, and the animation is kept when the output is GIF or WebP and the animation checkbox is on. In our test, a 24 frame 320 x 240 px GIF of 88 KB flipped horizontally became a 24 frame GIF of 90 KB, still animated.

With PNG or JPEG output, or with the checkbox off, only the first frame is used. In our test, the same GIF saved as PNG gave one frame, 5 KB.

Limits: Size and Pixels

Each picture can be up to 5 MB without an account and up to 10 MB when you are signed in. Each picture can have up to 16 MP (4096 x 4096) width x height, checked before the picture is opened.

Signed-in jobs can use up to 60 seconds in the web tool, and anonymous jobs up to 30 seconds. A result can be up to 20 MB. A large photo saved as PNG can pass that limit, so use JPEG or WebP. Such a job fails with output_limit and the credits are refunded.

What to Check in the Result

Look at the flipped picture first. Check that the direction is the one you chose and that text is mirrored where you expect it. Check the size, which should match the original for a flip.

If the result panel says the output was saved as PNG or filled with the background color, read that note before you use the file.

Flip an Image from Code

Send a POST request to https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/image-jobs?op=image_edit&action=flip. The body is the raw picture bytes, not JSON or multipart. Set Content-Type to image/png, image/jpeg, image/webp, image/gif, image/avif, image/bmp or image/tiff. Pass the direction and other settings in the query string.

Authorize with Authorization: Bearer <API key> or the x-api-key header. The response is 202 with a job_id. Poll GET /v1/jobs/:id, then download the result from the short-lived download_url. Each request takes one job. Errors include 400 invalid_params, 400 unsupported_image, 413 file_too_large, 402 insufficient_credits and 429 rate limited. The page shows a ready cURL, Node and Python example built from your settings. See /docs/ for the general API.

Privacy: What Happens to Your Picture

Your picture is sent to our server, and nothing is edited in the browser. The uploaded file is used only to make the result. The working copy of the upload is deleted as soon as the job ends, whether it succeeds or fails.

In the free web tool, the result is deleted after 10 minutes. No history is kept, and download links are short-lived. Camera and location tags are not written to the result. You must have the right to use what you upload under our Acceptable Use Policy.

Questions

Can I flip an image for free?

Yes, you can flip an image with this free tool without signing up. Anonymous use needs a human check, and each visitor can run 30 jobs per day.

How do I make a mirror image of a picture?

Upload the picture and keep the Horizontal direction, which is the default. Horizontal flip swaps the left and right sides, so the result is a mirror image.

How do I turn a picture upside down?

Choose the Vertical direction to flip the picture top to bottom. For an upside down image that is also reversed left to right, choose Both.

Does flipping change the size of the picture?

No, flipping keeps the size of the picture. In our test, an 800 x 560 px PNG stayed 800 x 560 px after a horizontal flip.

Does flipping reduce the quality?

Flipping does not change any pixel, but JPEG and WebP are lossy when saved. PNG keeps every pixel, so choose PNG if you want no loss from the final encoding.

What is the difference between flipping and rotating?

A flip makes a mirror image, and a turn does not. Use the Rotate Image tool to turn a picture by an angle.

Will text on the picture be mirrored?

Yes, a horizontal flip makes text on the picture read as mirrored text. Vertical flip turns text upside down.

Can I flip an animated GIF?

Yes, every frame is flipped and the animation is kept when the output is GIF or WebP and the animation checkbox is on. With PNG or JPEG output, only the first frame is used.

Which file types can I upload?

You can upload PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP and TIFF files. SVG, HEIC and camera RAW files are not accepted.

Can I flip an image in my own code?

Yes, use the image_edit operation with action=flip on the image-jobs endpoint. The page shows ready cURL, Node and Python examples, and the API reference is at /docs/.

Need this in your app or in bulk?

This tool runs on the same platform as the API, so the same image is one HTTP request from your code. A free account includes 100 credits a month.
