Upside Down Text Generator

The Upside Down Text Generator turns your text into a look-alike that reads upside down. Each letter is swapped for a turned character, and the order of the letters is reversed, so the line appears flipped when you view it. The tool is free and needs no signup.

  • These are look-alike Unicode characters, not real fonts. Some apps may show them badly, and some fonts may show an empty box for a character.
  • Screen readers may read upside down text badly or skip it, so do not use it for important information.
  • Do not use upside down text for a username or password. Many sign-up forms accept only plain letters and numbers.

12 / 280 characters. Letters A to Z and digits are styled; other characters stay as typed.

3 styles. Press Copy to put the styled text on your clipboard.

  • Upside down

    plɹoʍ 'ollǝH

The text is reversed so it reads upside down. A few letters look the same turned around and stay as typed.

  • Turned letters (same order)

    Hǝllo' ʍoɹlp

Each letter is turned around but the order does not change. A few letters look the same turned and stay as typed.

  • Reversed text (plain letters)

    dlrow ,olleH

The order of the characters is reversed; the letters themselves are not changed.

In one sentence

A free online generator that turns plain text upside down by turning each letter into a look-alike character and reversing the order, with two more flip styles, all done in your browser.

Key facts

  • Input: up to 280 characters of text; three styles: Upside down (turned letters and reversed order, so "Hello" becomes "ollǝH"), Turned letters (same order) and Reversed text (plain letters).
  • The letters l, o, s, x, z, the capitals H, I, N, O, S, X, Z and the digits 0 and 8 look the same turned around and stay as typed; a few turned letters are rare characters that some fonts show as an empty box.
  • The styles are look-alike Unicode characters, not fonts: a search for plain letters usually does not find them, some fonts and apps show an empty box for some of them, and screen readers may read them badly.
  • Do not use styled text for a password; many sign-up forms accept only plain letters and numbers for a username.
  • Free, with no account, no human check and no daily limit, because the text is changed on your device.

How it works

  1. Type or paste your text in the box labelled "Your text". The box opens with the sample text "Hello, world".
  2. Look at the Flip and reverse group. It is already selected and shows three styles: Upside down, Turned letters (same order) and Reversed text (plain letters).
  3. Find the style you want in the list. The result updates as you type.
  4. Press Copy on the row you want. The button says "Copied" for a moment.
  5. Paste the text where you need it. Check it first in the app you plan to use.

How to use the Upside Down Text Generator

The tool opens on the Flip and reverse group, so the upside down styles appear first. Type or paste your text in the box, and the list of styles updates as you type. You do not need to press a button to create the results.

Each row shows a style name, your text in that style and a Copy button. Press Copy to put the styled text on your clipboard. If the box is empty, the rows show sample text and the Copy buttons are off.

  • Press All styles to see all 30 styles.
  • Press any other group button to switch to its styles.

How upside down text works: flip and reverse

To make text read as if the page were turned 180 degrees, two things must happen. Each letter is replaced by a look-alike that is a turned letter, and the order of the letters is reversed, so the last letter comes first. Upside down text from this tool follows both steps.

For example, "Hello" in Upside down becomes "ollǝH". The letters are changed, and the word now starts with the last letter of the original.

The three styles of this upside down text generator

The Flip and reverse group has three styles. Each one changes the text in a different way, so pick the one that fits your goal. Upside down is also listed under the Weird and creepy group, so you can find it in either place.

  • Upside down reverses the order and turns each letter. The whole line reads upside down.
  • Turned letters (same order) turns each letter but keeps the order. The result reads wrongly from left to right.
  • Reversed text (plain letters) only reverses the order. The letters stay normal.

Flip text generator

This page works as a flip text generator. The Upside down style flips the whole line so it reads as if the page were turned around, and the Turned letters style flips each letter and keeps the order.

Letters that look the same upside down

Some letters look the same when turned around, so the tool leaves them as typed. These are the lowercase letters l, o, s, x and z. The capitals H, I, N, O, S, X and Z also stay as typed.

This applies to the Turned letters and Upside down styles. The result still looks upside down, because these characters already look correct when turned. Only the other letters around them change.

Punctuation and digits

Digits other than 0 and 8 are swapped for turned look-alikes. The digits 0 and 8 stay as typed because they look the same turned around.

Some punctuation marks also change. A question mark becomes ¿, an exclamation mark becomes ¡, and a full stop becomes ˙. Brackets are mirrored. Other punctuation stays as you typed it.

When upside down text works and when it does not

Upside down text works well for short, playful lines, such as a nickname, a caption or a decorated word. It is a good fit for a short post where you want a turned look.

It does not work well for long passages, links or information that people must read. Characters that have no turned look-alike stay as typed, so a line may be only partly flipped. Check the result in the app where you plan to use it.

Limits: fonts, search and readability

The turned characters come from Unicode, and not every font has a picture for them. Some rare characters, such as the turned forms used for B and K, may show as an empty box. The result depends on the device and the app.

Search engines and spell checkers do not know these characters as plain letters. A search for normal words may not find text that you have turned upside down.

Upside down text and screen readers

Screen readers may read each turned character by its Unicode name, skip it or read it badly. A listener may not follow the line at all. For this reason, upside down text is hard to use for anything that people must understand.

If accessibility matters for your audience, keep upside down text for short decorative words. Give the plain version of any important message next to it.

Privacy: nothing is uploaded

The text is changed in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, nothing is uploaded and nothing is saved. There is no account and no daily limit, and the tool is free.

You can type private text into the box and copy the result without sending the text anywhere.

Questions

How do I write upside down text?

Type your text in the "Your text" box, then press Copy on the Upside down row. The result is reversed and each letter is replaced by a turned look-alike.

How does an upside down text generator work?

It replaces each letter with a turned look-alike character and reverses the order of the letters. Digits and some punctuation marks are also swapped where a turned form exists.

Why is the text reversed as well as turned?

A line only reads upside down when the letters are turned and the order is reversed. Turning alone makes the words read backwards from left to right.

What is the difference between Upside down and Turned letters?

Upside down turns the letters and reverses the order. Turned letters (same order) turns the letters but keeps the order, so the line reads wrongly from left to right.

Why do some letters stay the same?

The letters l, o, s, x, z and the capitals H, I, N, O, S, X, Z look the same when turned around. The digits 0 and 8 do too, so the tool leaves them as typed.

Can I copy and paste upside down text?

Yes. Press Copy and paste the text where you need it. Check that the app you use shows the characters correctly.

Why do some letters show as empty boxes?

Some turned characters are rare, and not every font has a picture for them. Your device or app may then show an empty box or a question mark.

Is upside down text bad for screen readers?

It can be. Screen readers may read the characters by their Unicode names, skip them or read them badly, so avoid it for important content.

Is the upside down text generator free?

Yes. The tool is free, needs no account and has no daily limit. The text is changed in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Need images or PDFs from your own code?

This generator runs in your browser and does not use the API. To turn text or HTML into an image or a PDF from your own code, the render API does that. A free account includes 100 credits a month.
