URL to Markdown

Use this free URL to Markdown tool to turn a public web page into Markdown text. Enter the address, and the page is opened in headless Chromium, converted in your browser, and ready to copy or download as a .md file.

  • Pages behind a login show the login screen, because no cookies are sent. A site that blocks the request gives its error page text, not the article.
  • One page per request. For many pages, use the API, which returns the rendered HTML for your own code to convert.

Only public pages can be read. Only convert pages you are allowed to copy.

The server opens the page in headless Chromium, lets its JavaScript run and returns the page's HTML. The conversion to Markdown then happens in your browser.

Complete the human check to enable the button.

Result

Your Markdown will appear here.

Very large pages are refused (the page HTML is limited to 2 MB). For those, use the API.

Retention: web-tool results are deleted after 10 minutes and no history is kept. API results are kept 1 day on the free plan and 7 days on Starter and Pro (30 days on Business).

  • No account needed

10 per minute and 50 per day for free.

  • Real browser rendering

Headless Chromium, the same engine as the API.

  • Deleted automatically

Web tool results are removed after 10 minutes.

Privacy: what you submit is used only to make this file. The working copy is deleted when the job ends, the result after 10 minutes. See the privacy policy.

Do this from your code

The same request, built from the input and options above. Create an account to get an API key.

curl -X POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/render \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $AIIPWORLD_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"html":"","output":"pdf","options":{}}'

# returns {"job_id": "...", "status": "queued"}; then poll:
curl https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/jobs/JOB_ID -H "Authorization: Bearer $AIIPWORLD_API_KEY"

Batches

The web tool handles 1 web page at a time. The API takes one request per URL, so you can script as many as your plan allows.

More control

Whole-page capture (full_page), clipping to a region, request headers and a custom user agent are API options. See the docs.

Retention

Web-tool results are kept 10 minutes; free API results 1 day; Starter and Pro results 7 days; Business 30 days. The web tool allows 10 conversions per minute and 50 per day per visitor.

In one sentence

A free online tool that opens a public web address in headless Chromium, lets its JavaScript run, and converts the rendered page to Markdown in your browser.

Key facts

  • Input: a public http or https address; private network addresses are blocked and pages behind a login show the login screen.
  • The server returns the rendered HTML (up to 2 MB); your browser then converts it to Markdown with turndown.
  • Output: Markdown to copy or download as a .md file; one page per request. The API returns the rendered HTML (output html), not Markdown.
  • Free without an account: up to 10 conversions per minute and 50 per day per visitor, of which 5 per day may be web addresses. Signed in, each conversion costs 1 credit (100 free credits every month).
  • Files are deleted automatically: 10 minutes after conversion without an account, 1 day with a free account.
  • Developers can run the same render with POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/render and an API key (see the API docs page).

How it works

  1. Paste a public http or https address into the box.
  2. Leave main content only switched on if you want the article without navigation and footers.
  3. Choose your heading, list, code block and link options.
  4. Press Convert to Markdown and wait for the page to load.
  5. Press Copy or Download .md to save the Markdown.

How to convert a URL to Markdown

Paste the full address of a public page, starting with https:// or http://, and press Convert to Markdown. The tool takes one page at a time. To convert webpage to markdown for a page you have open, copy its address from the browser bar and paste it here.

Set the options before you convert. You can choose heading style (hash or underline), list marker (-, * or +), code block style (fenced or indented), tables and strikethrough, whether to keep links, whether to keep images, and whether to keep main content only. If the first result does not look right, change an option and convert the same address again.

What happens when you convert a webpage to Markdown

The address goes to our server. The server opens the page in headless Chromium, which is a browser with no window. The page's JavaScript runs, the tool waits for the page to load, and the server returns the page's HTML after rendering. The HTML can be up to 2 MB. A larger page fails with an output limit error.

Your browser then downloads that HTML and converts it to Markdown with turndown, an open-source library. The conversion happens on your device. The Markdown appears in a box with Copy and Download .md buttons, plus a word count and a byte count.

Relative links and image addresses are turned into full addresses, using the page address you entered. Links in the Markdown still work when you open it outside the original page.

Converting a page this way counts as a web-page conversion in the free tool, which has a smaller separate daily allowance. When you are signed in, each conversion costs 1 credit.

Why JavaScript pages need a real browser

Many modern sites add their text with JavaScript after the first download. If you save the raw HTML with a plain download, much of that text can be missing. This tool runs the page's scripts in headless Chromium first, so the HTML it returns includes the content the scripts added.

Pasted HTML only holds what is in the text you paste. When you copy HTML from a page, its scripts do not run, so anything the page builds with JavaScript is missing. Use this URL tool when you want the rendered page. Use the HTML to Markdown tool when you already have the HTML and want to convert it without a server step.

  • Use the URL tool for a live page, such as a news article or a product page built with scripts.
  • Use the HTML to Markdown tool for HTML you already have on your own computer.

Main content only, links and images

Turn on main content only to keep the article and drop most of the surrounding page. When the page has a main or article element, the tool uses it. Navigation, headers, footers, asides, forms and dialogs are dropped. This option is on by default in this tool.

Keep links and keep images let you choose whether links and image addresses appear in the Markdown. The Markdown refers to each image by its address. The tool does not store image files for you.

  • Tables and strikethrough use GitHub-style Markdown, and both are on by default.
  • Scripts, style blocks and iframes are removed before the conversion.
  • Markdown cannot show merged table cells, inline colours or page layout, so very complex layouts come out as plain paragraphs.

Pages you cannot convert

Some pages cannot be converted. Pages behind a login show the login screen, because the tool sends no cookies. Private networks, localhost and cloud metadata addresses are refused, including when a page redirects to one of them.

Some sites block automated requests or answer with an error page. In that case the tool gives you the text of that page, not the article. We do not bypass blocks, so a page that refuses access will not convert.

If a page is larger than the HTML limit, the conversion stops with an output limit error. Try a smaller page, or check whether the address you have is the one that holds the article.

Website to Markdown for many pages (API)

This tool converts one page per request. If you need website to markdown for many pages, use the API. Send a POST request to /v1/render with the url and with output set to html. The API returns the rendered HTML as a text file, and your code converts that file to Markdown with its own converter.

The API does not return Markdown itself. Your code does the conversion, so you choose the converter and the options that suit your project.

The result file is kept for 10 minutes without an account, and the page's HTML passes through our servers during that time. Download what you need before then.

Only convert pages you may copy

Convert only pages you have the right to copy, such as your own site, pages you have permission to use, or pages whose owner allows copying. Read the terms of the site before you reuse any converted content.

Converting a page does not give you any rights in its content. The tool gives no legal advice about copyright or licences. Whether you may reuse a page depends on the page owner and on the law where you live.

Questions

Is the URL to Markdown tool free?

Yes. You can convert a page without an account. Each conversion counts as a web-page conversion in the free tool, which has a smaller separate daily allowance. When you are signed in, a conversion costs 1 credit.

Does the tool run JavaScript on the page?

Yes. The page is opened in headless Chromium, its JavaScript runs, and the rendered HTML is returned for conversion. Text that a page builds with scripts is included in the Markdown.

Can I convert a page behind a login or a paywall?

No. Pages behind a login show the login screen, because no cookies are sent. The tool does not bypass blocks or sign-in screens, so those pages will not convert.

Can I download the result as a .md file?

Yes. Press Download .md to save the Markdown file, or press Copy to paste the text into your editor.

Can I convert several URLs at once?

Not in the web tool, which handles one page per request. For many pages, call the API with output set to html, and convert each returned HTML file in your own code.

Why does a site fail to convert?

Common causes are a login screen, a block on automated requests, an address on a private network, or a page whose HTML is larger than 2 MB. A site that blocks the request gives its error page text instead of the article.

How large a page can I convert?

The rendered HTML can be up to 2 MB. A larger page fails with an output limit error, and the tool shows that message instead of a Markdown result.

What is the difference between webpage to Markdown and website to Markdown?

A webpage to Markdown conversion takes one address and converts that one page. This tool does not crawl a site. To convert a whole website, send one request per page through the API, then convert each returned HTML file.

Does the API return Markdown?

No. The API returns the rendered HTML as a text file. Your code converts that HTML to Markdown, so the conversion step stays in your hands.

Is my page stored after conversion?

The result file is deleted after 10 minutes without an account. The page's HTML passes through our servers during that time. Download your Markdown in time, because no history is kept.

How are relative links handled?

The tool turns relative links and image sources into full addresses, using the address you entered. The links still work when you read the Markdown outside the original page.

Are images downloaded into the Markdown?

No. The Markdown refers to each image by its address, and the tool does not store image files for you. Use the keep images option to choose whether image lines appear at all.

Does the tool give legal advice about copying a page?

No. The tool gives no legal advice. Check the site's terms and your own rights before you reuse any converted content.

Need this in your app or in bulk?

This tool runs on the render API, so the same page HTML is one HTTP request from your code. A free account includes 100 credits a month.
