How it works

  1. Look through the list, or type a word such as happy, shrug, cat or hug into the search box.
  2. To narrow the list, press one of the group buttons, such as Animals or Angry and annoyed. Press All faces to see the whole list again.
  3. Press Copy under the face you like. The button says "Copied" for a moment, and the face is on your clipboard.
  4. Paste it into your message, bio, comment or post.

How to copy and paste text faces

The list is at the top of this page. Each card shows one face, a short name for it and a Copy button. Press Copy and the face goes to your clipboard. Then paste it with the usual paste command, Ctrl+V on Windows or Cmd+V on a Mac, or with the paste option on your phone.

You do not have to install anything or sign in. The page works on a phone, a tablet and a computer.

What text faces are

A text face is a small face drawn with letters, numbers and symbols. The simple ones, such as :) and ;), are called emoticons. The longer ones, such as (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻, come from Japanese online culture and are called kaomoji, which means face characters.

A text face is plain text, not a picture and not an emoji. It uses the same characters as the rest of your message, so it works in any place that accepts those characters.

Text faces by group

The list has 10 groups, so you can go straight to the mood you want. Press a group button above the list to see only that group.

  • Happy and smiling, and Love and hugs, for good news, crushes and friends.
  • Sad and crying, Angry and annoyed, and Surprised and shy, for moods and replies.
  • Cool and smug, and Playful and silly, for jokes and teasing.
  • Animals, for cats, bears, dogs and rabbits.
  • Actions and gestures, which has the shrug, waves, dances, bows and table flips.
  • Classic emoticons, the simple faces made of colons and brackets.

Search for a text face

The search box matches the name of a face, a few extra words that go with it, and the name of its group. Type more than one word and every word has to match. For example, "cat" finds the cat faces, and "table flip" finds the table flips.

If nothing matches, the page says so. Try a shorter word, or press All faces to clear the group filter.

Shrug, table flip and other classics

The shrug ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and the table flip (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ are two of the most used. The list also has the matching calm face, ┬─┬ノ( º _ ºノ), which puts the table back.

Some faces, such as the shrug, contain a backslash, which some apps use for formatting. If a face looks wrong after you paste it, for example a missing arm on the shrug, check the app's rules for that character.

Why a face can look different on another device

Text faces use characters from many parts of Unicode, such as Japanese katakana, Greek letters, box-drawing symbols and math signs. Each device picks a font for each character. If the main font has no picture for a character, the device picks another font or shows an empty box.

So the same face can look a little different on another phone or in another app, and a rarer character can fail. Test the face where you will use it.

Where text faces may not work

Some sites and forms do not accept all of these characters. Many usernames, passwords and form fields allow only plain letters and numbers, and some apps remove characters they do not know. This page cannot tell you what a specific site will do, so test the face before you rely on it.

Do not use a text face in a password. You may not be able to type the same characters on another device.

Privacy: nothing is uploaded

The list is part of this page, and the search and the copy buttons work on your device. What you type in the search box is not sent to a server, and it is not saved.

The page is free, needs no account and has no daily limit. It has no API.

Need images or PDFs from your own code?

This generator runs in your browser and does not use the API. To turn text or HTML into an image or a PDF from your own code, the render API does that. A free account includes 100 credits a month.
