GIF to WebP Converter
GIF to WebP conversion turns your GIF into a WebP file, and an animated GIF stays animated. Use the tool below to convert one GIF at a time, still or animated. Results depend on the picture, so compare the file size before you replace the original.
- The tool handles one image at a time. Free web uploads are limited to 5 MB per image.
- Without an account you can convert 30 images per day per visitor. Free web results are kept for 10 minutes.
- Pictures over 16 MP (4096 x 4096) are refused. Animations have frame and total pixel limits.

Result
Your WebP will appear here.
The free web tool takes images up to 5 MB, 30 per day. Signed in, the limit is 10 MB. The image keeps its pixel size unless you choose Make smaller.
Retention: web-tool results are deleted after 10 minutes and no history is kept. API results are kept 1 day on the free plan and 7 days on Starter and Pro (30 days on Business and Scale).
No account needed
30 images per day for free, no watermark.
Original size by default
The image is re-encoded at its full pixel size unless you choose Make smaller. Camera and location tags are not copied into the result.
Deleted automatically
Web tool results are removed after 10 minutes.
Privacy: what you submit is used only to make this file. The working copy is deleted when the job ends, the result after 10 minutes. See the privacy policy.
Do this from your code
The same conversion as an API request: send the image bytes, then poll the job. It needs an API key; a free account can create one.
curl -X POST "https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/image-jobs?op=image_convert&format=webp" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $AIIPWORLD_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: image/png" \
--data-binary @input.png
# returns {"job_id": "...", "status": "queued", "credits_reserved": 1}; then poll:
curl https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/jobs/JOB_ID -H "Authorization: Bearer $AIIPWORLD_API_KEY"Batches
The web tool handles 1 image at a time. The API takes one request per image, so you can script as many as your plan allows.
Retention
Web-tool results are kept 10 minutes; free API results 1 day; Starter and Pro results 7 days; Business and Scale 30 days. The web tool allows 10 conversions per minute and 50 per day per visitor.
In one sentence
A free online tool that converts a GIF to WebP, keeping every frame, each frame's delay and the loop count of an animated GIF.
Key facts
- Input: a GIF (animated or still) up to 5 MB in the free tool and 10 MB when signed in, and up to 16 MP (4096 x 4096) per frame; an animation up to 100 frames and 16 MP in all without an account, 300 frames and 64 MP when signed in.
- Settings: quality 1 to 100 (80 by default), lossless WebP, keep transparency or fill with a background colour, keep the animation or use the first frame only, and an optional smaller size.
- In our test a generated 24-frame 320 x 240 px GIF of 102 KB became a 61 KB animated WebP with the same frames, delays and loop (46 KB at quality 60, 112 KB at quality 95); the test animation was generated by our scripts and results vary.
- Free without an account: up to 10 conversions per minute and 50 per day per visitor, no watermark. Signed in, each render costs 1 credit (100 free credits every month).
- Files are deleted automatically: 10 minutes after conversion without an account, 1 day with a free account.
- Developers can run the same job with POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/image-jobs?op=image_convert (the image as the request body, settings in the query string) and an API key (see the API docs page).
How it works
- Upload one GIF, animated or still, into the tool.
- Check the preview and the image size shown before you start.
- Choose a Quality value, or turn on Lossless WebP for an exact copy of every pixel.
- Click Convert to WebP and wait for the result panel.
- Download the WebP and check it in the browser you plan to use.
Example output
How to convert GIF to WebP
Open the tool and upload your GIF. The Convert to list is already set to WebP, so you only need to pick your settings and start the job. The conversion runs on our server, and the result panel shows the new file size.
Keep the default Quality of 80 for most files. Use the Size menu only if you also need a new pixel size. Plain conversion does not change the pixel size.
- Upload one GIF at a time.
- Use Quality 80 as a starting point.
What GIF to WebP conversion does
A GIF to WebP conversion re-encodes the same picture in the WebP format. The colours and pixels come from the GIF, so the result looks like the original, with the file size changed. A GIF has at most 256 colours, and the conversion does not bring back colours the GIF has already lost.
In our test, a 320 x 240 px GIF with 24 frames and 102 KB became a 61 KB WebP. These measurements were made on pictures we generated, not on real photographs, and results vary with the picture.
The animation is kept
An animated GIF becomes an animated WebP with every frame, each frame's delay and the loop count kept. In our test, the 24 frames of 80 ms (1.9 s) that loop forever stayed the same after conversion. A GIF with a loop count of 3 gave a WebP with a loop count of 3.
Keep the animation is on by default. If you turn it off, only the first frame is used and the result is a still WebP.
Quality and file size
Quality is a slider from 1 to 100, with 80 as the default. It applies to lossy WebP. Lower values give smaller files and higher values give larger files. In our test, the same animation was 46 KB at quality 60, 61 KB at the default, and 112 KB at quality 95.
Results vary with the picture. Try two or three values and compare the sizes in the result panel.
Lossless WebP
The Lossless WebP checkbox keeps every pixel exactly. The file can be smaller or larger than a lossy WebP, depending on the picture. In our test with flat artwork, the lossless file was 55 KB, which was smaller than the lossy file at the default quality.
Turn on Lossless WebP when exact pixels matter more than file size. Turn it off to use the Quality slider.
Transparency
GIF transparency is either on or off for each pixel. WebP supports a full alpha channel, but the GIF has no partly see-through pixels. The converted WebP keeps the same hard edges, and the tool does not smooth them.
Keep transparency is on by default. In our test, a transparent 256 x 256 px sticker animation of 20 frames went from 63 KB as a GIF to 25 KB as a WebP with transparency kept. With Keep transparency off and a white background, the file was 21 KB.
Animation limits: frames and pixels
Animations have two limits: the number of frames, and the total pixels. Total pixels are frame width x frame height x number of frames. Signed-in users can convert up to 300 frames and 64 MP in total. Without an account, the limit is 100 frames and 16 MP in total.
The check is made from the file header before the frames are decoded. Each single frame is still limited to 16 MP (4096 x 4096). If an animation is over the limit, the job fails with an animation_too_large message and the credits are returned.
- Signed in: up to 300 frames and 64 MP in total.
- Without an account: up to 100 frames and 16 MP in total.
Where an animated WebP works
Modern browsers show WebP files. Some older programs, chat apps and upload forms may not accept an animated WebP. Check the place where you plan to use the file before you replace the GIF.
Keep the original GIF until you have tested the WebP where it will be shown.
GIF to WebP from code
Send a POST request to https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/image-jobs?op=image_convert with the raw image bytes as the body, not JSON or multipart. Set Content-Type to image/gif, and set format=webp in the query string. Add Authorization: Bearer with your API key, or use x-api-key. Each request handles one image.
For an animation, add timeout_sec=60. The response is 202 with a job_id. Poll GET /v1/jobs/:id until the job succeeds, fails or times out, then download the short-lived download_url. The page shows a ready cURL, Node and Python example built from your settings. Errors include 400 invalid_params, 400 or 422 unsupported_image, 413 file_too_large, 402 insufficient_credits and 429 rate limited.
Privacy: what happens to your file
Your GIF is sent to our server, where it is converted with sharp and libvips. The uploaded image is used only to make the result and is deleted as soon as the job ends, whether it succeeds or fails. The result is deleted after 10 minutes in the free web tool, and no history is kept.
Camera and location tags are not copied into the result. You must have the right to use the file you upload, as set out in our Acceptable Use Policy.
Questions
Can I convert GIF to WebP for free?
Yes, the tool is free to use. Without an account you can convert 30 images per day per visitor.
Does the WebP keep the animation?
Yes. An animated GIF becomes an animated WebP with every frame, each frame's delay and the loop count kept, when Keep the animation is on.
Is the WebP smaller than the GIF?
In our tests it was smaller every time, but a different picture can give a different result. A 102 KB animated GIF became a 61 KB WebP, and a 20 KB still GIF became a 5.6 KB WebP. Compare the sizes in the result panel before you replace the GIF.
Which quality should I choose?
Start with the default of 80. Try 60 for a smaller file or 95 for a larger one, then compare the sizes in the result panel.
Does it keep transparency?
Yes, Keep transparency is on by default. The GIF's hard edges stay hard, because GIF has no partly see-through pixels.
How many frames can I convert?
Signed-in users can convert up to 300 frames and 64 MP in total. Without an account the limit is 100 frames and 16 MP in total.
Can I convert only the first frame?
Yes. Turn off Keep the animation, and only the first frame is used and the result is a still WebP.
Will the WebP play everywhere?
Modern browsers show WebP. Some older programs, chat apps and upload forms may not accept an animated WebP, so check before you replace the GIF.
Can I change the size at the same time?
Yes, the optional Size menu lets you set a new size for WebP output. When Size is used, Lossless WebP is turned off.
Can I convert GIF to WebP in my own code?
Yes. Send the raw GIF bytes to the image-jobs endpoint with op=image_convert and format=webp, then poll the job until it finishes.
Need this in your app or in bulk?
This tool runs on the same platform as the API, so the same image is one HTTP request from your code. A free account includes 100 credits a month.
