# WebP to PNG: Convert Your Image Online

> A free online tool that converts a WebP image to PNG (or JPEG) at the same pixel size, keeping transparency in PNG.

This WebP to PNG converter turns a WebP picture into a PNG file with the same width and height in pixels. Use this free tool to convert a WebP image without signing up, or to get a PNG for software that does not accept WebP files. Transparent areas are kept by default.

## Key facts

- Input: WebP, PNG, JPG, GIF or BMP, up to 5 MB in the free tool and 10 MB when signed in, and up to 16 MP (4096 x 4096); the type is read from the file content.
- Output: a PNG with the same width and height and transparency kept; choose JPEG in the target list to get a WebP to JPG conversion, which fills transparent areas with a background colour.
- PNG is lossless but cannot restore detail a lossy WebP already lost; in our test a 22 KB WebP became a 290 KB PNG.
- An animated WebP is converted from its first frame; the upload is deleted when the job ends and the result after 10 minutes; signed-in users pay 1 credit per image.
- Free without an account: up to 10 conversions per minute and 50 per day per visitor, no watermark. Signed in, each render costs 1 credit (100 free credits every month).
- Files are deleted automatically: 10 minutes after conversion without an account, 1 day with a free account.
- Developers can run the same render with POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/render and an API key (see the API docs page).

## How it works

1. Select your WebP file in the upload box.
2. Check the preview and the image size shown before conversion.
3. Leave "Convert to" set to PNG, or pick JPEG or WebP if you need a different format.
4. Press Convert image and wait for the result.
5. Check the results panel, then press Download to save the PNG.

## How to convert WebP to PNG

This page opens with PNG as the target format, so a standard conversion needs only your file and one click. The tool reads the file type from the file content, not the file name, so a WebP picture is recognized even if its name ends in another extension. Before upload, the browser checks the file type, size and pixel count, and shows a preview with the image size. When the conversion finishes, the results panel shows the output on a checkerboard background, so you can see any transparent areas. If you want a different target, the list also offers JPEG and WebP.

## What WebP to PNG conversion does

The conversion decodes your WebP picture into pixels and then encodes those pixels again as a PNG file. The picture is not resized and nothing is cropped, so the result has exactly the same width and height in pixels as the original. A phone photo that is stored rotated is turned upright. Camera and location tags (EXIF and GPS) are not copied into the result.

The work is done on our servers by sharp, a Node.js image library with an Apache-2.0 licence that is built on libvips. The conversion is not artificial intelligence. It is a format change, and your image is sent to our server rather than processed in your browser.

## Why people change WebP to PNG

The most common reason is compatibility. MDN reports that WebP is supported by current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari, but some older software, old email clients and some upload forms still do not accept WebP. A PNG file gives you a format that those places can open. MDN generally recommends WebP for raster images, so convert only when the destination needs PNG. PNG is also lossless, so saving to PNG adds no further compression loss at that step.

## WebP to PNG: what you get and what you do not

PNG stores the pixels exactly, so the result keeps everything the WebP file contained. It cannot restore detail that the WebP encoder already removed. If your WebP was lossy, that loss happened when the WebP was made, and converting it to PNG only stores the current pixels without further loss.

Expect the file to grow. In our engine test, a 22 KB lossy WebP made from a flat illustration became a 290 KB PNG when converted back. That PNG is also larger than the original 90 KB PNG, which was tuned for flat colour. The test pictures were generated by our test scripts, not taken from real photographs.

## Transparent WebP to PNG

Transparency is kept by default. With "Keep transparency" switched on, areas that are transparent in the WebP stay transparent in the PNG. PNG supports full alpha transparency, and the results panel tells you whether transparency was kept or filled.

If you switch "Keep transparency" off, the transparent areas are filled with the background colour instead. The background colour is white unless you choose another. Use that option when the picture will sit on a page or in a document with a fixed background colour.

## WebP to JPG instead of PNG

To get a JPEG, choose JPEG in the target list. WebP to JPG uses the same tool with a different output. JPEG cannot store transparency, so any transparent areas are filled with the background colour, which is white by default. You can choose another colour before you convert.

JPEG is lossy, and the quality setting from 1 to 100 controls the trade-off. The default is 80. A lower number gives a smaller file with more visible loss. Quality applies only to JPEG and lossy WebP, so it does not affect a PNG result.

## Animated WebP files

An animated WebP is converted from its first frame only, and the result is a still image. The results panel says "first frame only" for animations, so you can see that this happened. Check the preview before you convert if the first frame is not the one you want.

This tool does not output animation, so an animated file will not stay animated after conversion. Animation is supported in the WebP format itself, according to Google, but this tool produces a single PNG.

## Why the PNG is bigger than the WebP

PNG is lossless, so it keeps every pixel. WebP can be smaller because lossy WebP discards some detail, and that is the trade-off you accept when you choose it. Google reports that lossless WebP images are 26% smaller than PNGs, and that lossy WebP images are 25 to 34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at an equivalent SSIM quality index. These are Google's figures from developers.google.com/speed/webp, not ours.

In our own test, a 775 KB JPEG photo of 2000 x 1500 px became a 529 KB WebP at quality 80, and a 7.5 MB PNG. The test picture was synthetic, so your results will vary with the picture.

## Size and file limits

The free web tool accepts images up to 5 MB each, and you can convert 30 images per day per visitor. Each image can be up to 16 MP (4096 x 4096). Signed-in users can convert images up to 10 MB. Anonymous use needs a human check (Cloudflare Turnstile). Signed-in users skip the check and use 1 credit per image, plus 1 credit for each 5 MB of result after the first 5 MB.

The result also has a size limit. If the output would be larger than 20 MB, the job fails with an "output too large" message instead of returning a cut-off file. A large photo saved as PNG can reach that size. In that case, choose JPEG or WebP as the target, or lower the quality. Failed and timed-out jobs are refunded.

## WebP to PNG from code

You can run the same conversion through the API. Send the raw image bytes as the body of a POST request to the image jobs endpoint, not as JSON or multipart form data. Set op to image_convert and format to png in the query string, because the default operation is different. Send your API key from the dashboard as a Bearer token in the Authorization header.

The request returns 202 with a job ID. Poll the job until it reports succeeded, failed or timeout, then download the file from the short-lived signed link. The result reports the width, height and formats, so your code can check the output. The API takes one image per request. There is no batch endpoint, and webhooks are not available yet.

## Privacy: what happens to your file

Your uploaded image is used only to make the converted file. It is deleted as soon as the job ends, whether the job succeeds or fails. The converted file is kept for 10 minutes in the free web tool, and no history is kept. Download the result within that time, because download links are short-lived.

Before you upload, make sure you have the right to use the image. The Acceptable Use Policy explains what is allowed. The web tool does not add a watermark to your result.

## Questions

### Can I convert WebP to PNG for free?

Yes. The free web tool needs no account, and you can convert 30 images per day per visitor. Anonymous use needs a human check, and the result has no watermark.

### Does WebP to PNG keep transparency?

Yes, by default. "Keep transparency" is on, and the results panel shows whether transparency was kept or filled.

### Is WebP to PNG lossless?

The PNG step is lossless, but the WebP you start with may not be. Converting cannot restore detail that a lossy WebP already lost.

### Why is the PNG so much bigger than the WebP?

PNG stores exact pixels, while lossy WebP discards some detail to save space. The same picture can therefore grow several times over when converted back to PNG.

### Can I convert WebP to JPG here?

Yes. Choose JPEG in the target list. Transparent areas are filled with the background colour, and JPEG is lossy.

### Does the image change size in pixels?

No. The width and height stay the same, and nothing is cropped or resized.

### What happens to an animated WebP?

Only the first frame is converted, so the result is a still PNG.

### Why do some sites refuse WebP files?

Some older software, old email clients and some upload forms do not accept WebP. MDN reports support in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari, so older tools are the usual cause.

### How big can the WebP file be?

The free web tool accepts up to 5 MB per image, and signed-in users can use up to 10 MB. The output must also stay within 20 MB.

### How long is my file kept?

The converted file is kept for 10 minutes in the free web tool. Your uploaded image is deleted as soon as the job ends.

### Can I convert WebP to PNG in code?

Yes. Send the raw image bytes to the image jobs endpoint with op=image_convert and format=png, then poll the job until it finishes. The page shows a ready cURL, Node and Python example below the tool.
