# Spritesheet to GIF

> A free online tool that cuts a sprite sheet into equal cells, read left to right and top to bottom, and plays them as an animated GIF or WebP with the delay and repeat count you set.

## Key facts

- Input: one still picture (PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, GIF first frame, BMP or TIFF first page), up to 5 MB in the free tool and 10 MB when signed in; an animation is refused.
- Settings: columns and rows or a frame width and height, an optional number of frames, a delay of 20 to 60000 ms per frame, and a repeat count or forever.
- The animation it makes must fit the animation limits: up to 300 frames and 64 MP in total when signed in, 100 frames and 16 MP without an account.
- In our test an 800 x 600 px sheet of 5 x 5 cells with 24 filled became a GIF of 24 frames of 160 x 120 px at 80 ms, 1.9 s and 61 KB; the test sheet was generated by our scripts and results vary.
- The upload is deleted when the job ends and the result after 10 minutes; signed-in users pay 1 credit per file plus 1 credit for each started 10 MP of frames beyond the first 10 MP.
- Free without an account: up to 10 conversions per minute and 50 per day per visitor, no watermark. Signed in, each render costs 1 credit (100 free credits every month).
- Files are deleted automatically: 10 minutes after conversion without an account, 1 day with a free account.
- Developers can run the same render with POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/render and an API key (see the API docs page).

## How it works

1. Upload your sprite sheet. Use a PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, GIF (first frame), BMP or TIFF file that is a single picture.
2. Choose how to split the sheet. Use columns and rows, or enter the frame width and height in pixels.
3. Set the delay per frame in milliseconds. The default is 100 ms.
4. Choose Forever or a number of repeats, and choose GIF or Animated WebP under Save as.
5. Click Make GIF and check the result panel before you download.

## How to turn a sprite sheet into a GIF

Start with a sprite sheet that has equal-sized cells in a grid. Each cell becomes one frame of your animation. The tool reads the cells left to right, then top to bottom.

Upload the file, pick how to split it, and click Make GIF. The result panel then shows the frame count, playing time and loop setting.

## What this spritesheet to GIF tool does

This spritesheet to GIF tool takes one still picture and turns its grid of cells into an animation. The pixels of each cell are copied as they are. Only the final encoding changes colours or quality.

The tool does not draw, scale or add a background. It does not add spacing between cells, so padding must be zero or part of the frame size.

## Split by columns and rows, or by frame size

You can split the sheet in two ways. Enter the number of columns and rows, or enter the frame width and height in pixels. Both methods give the same result when the numbers match the grid.

If you use frame width and height, the tool uses as many whole frames as fit. Pixels left over on the right and at the bottom are ignored, and the result panel tells you how many.

## When the sheet does not divide evenly

The sheet width must divide by the number of columns, and the height must divide by the number of rows. If it does not, the page says so and asks for the frame size instead.

A frame bigger than the sheet is refused. A number of frames larger than the number of cells is also refused.

## Delay, speed and repeat

The delay per frame sets the speed. Enter a value from 20 to 60000 ms. The default is 100 ms, and every frame uses the same delay.

Under Repeat, choose Forever or a number of times from 1 to 65535. The tool stores that loop count in the file. There is no reverse or ping-pong option.

- Delay per frame: 20 to 60000 ms, default 100 ms
- Repeat: Forever, or 1 to 65535 times

## Empty cells at the end of the sheet

Some sheets have empty cells in the last row. Enter a number of frames under Number of frames to skip them. Leave the field empty to use every cell.

In our test, a sheet with 25 cells where the last was empty made a 25-frame animation of 2.0 s.

## Save as GIF or animated WebP

Choose GIF or Animated WebP under Save as. A GIF is written with at most 256 colours and dithering. Animated WebP is lossy, and you can set its quality with the slider. The default quality is 80.

In our test, the same 24-frame animation was 61 KB as a GIF and 35 KB as animated WebP. Your sizes will differ.

## Transparency and colours

A GIF keeps transparency, but each pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque. Partly transparent edges can look harder than in the source.

GIF output uses a palette of 256 colours with dithering. If your sprites have many shades, use animated WebP and check the result.

## Limits for the animation it makes

The tool checks the animation it would make before it runs. The limits apply to frames and to total pixels, which is frame width x frame height x number of frames.

Signed in, you can make up to 300 frames and 64 MP total pixels. Without an account, the limit is 100 frames and 16 MP total pixels. Each frame is limited to 16 MP (4096 x 4096).

The base price is 1 credit per file. It includes 10 megapixels of animation. Each started 10 megapixels above that adds 1 credit. Jobs over a limit fail, and their credits are returned.

## Which files the tool accepts

Upload a PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, GIF (first frame), BMP or TIFF (first page). The file must be a single picture. An animation is refused with the message "This file is already an animation."

Without an account, you can upload up to 5 MB per file and 30 files per day. Signed-in users can upload up to 10 MB per file. Results larger than 20 MB fail with an "output too large" message.

The file type is read from the file content, not the name. A text file renamed to .gif is refused.

## Make a GIF from a sprite sheet in code

Send a POST request to https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/image-jobs with the raw file bytes as the body. Set the Content-Type to the image type of your file. Add op=gif_edit and action=unsprite to the query string, along with your split and delay settings.

Authenticate with Authorization: Bearer or x-api-key. Send timeout_sec=60 for animations, the maximum. The API returns 202 with a job_id, and you poll GET /v1/jobs/:id. The page shows a ready cURL, Node and Python example that follows the settings you choose. See /docs/#image-jobs for details.

## Privacy: what happens to your file

Your file is sent to our server, where it is processed with sharp, an open-source image library built on libvips. This is ordinary image processing, not artificial intelligence.

The uploaded file is used only to make your result. It is deleted when the job ends, whether it succeeds or fails. In the free web tool, the result is deleted after 10 minutes. No history is kept, and download links are short-lived.

## Questions

### Can I turn a sprite sheet into a GIF for free?

Yes, you can use this tool for free without an account, within the daily limit. Signed-in use is charged in credits.

### In what order are the cells read?

The cells are read left to right, then top to bottom. Each cell becomes one frame.

### How do I set the frame size?

Choose frame width and height instead of columns and rows, then enter the size in pixels. The tool uses as many whole frames as fit.

### What if the sheet does not divide into whole frames?

With columns and rows, the sheet must divide evenly, or the page asks you for the frame size instead. With a frame width and height, pixels left over on the right and at the bottom are ignored, and the result panel shows how many.

### How do I set the speed?

Enter the delay per frame in milliseconds, from 20 to 60000. The default is 100 ms.

### Can I skip empty cells?

Yes, enter a number under Number of frames. Leave it empty to use every cell.

### Can I make the GIF play only once?

Yes, choose a number of times under Repeat, from 1 to 65535. The file stores that loop count.

### Does the GIF keep transparency?

GIF output keeps transparency, but each pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque. Partly transparent pixels become one or the other.

### Can I save an animated WebP instead?

Yes, choose Animated WebP under Save as. It is lossy, and you can adjust the quality slider.

### Why is my animation too long or too large?

The animation may be over the frame or total pixel limit. Use fewer frames or a smaller frame size, then try again.

### How long is my file kept?

In the free web tool, your result is deleted after 10 minutes. Your uploaded file is deleted when the job ends.

### Can I turn a sprite sheet into a GIF in code?

Yes, send the raw file to the image jobs API with op=gif_edit and action=unsprite. The docs at /docs/#image-jobs describe the parameters.
