## How to split a PDF online

Start by uploading one PDF. The tool reads the file's first bytes to confirm it is a PDF, so a file with a renamed extension is treated as what it really is. Then pick one of the four modes and set its pages if the mode needs them. You can split PDF by pages, by ranges or by a fixed number of pages.

Click Split PDF to run the job. When it finishes, the result panel shows how many pages went in and how many PDFs came out, along with the size and the credits reserved. Download the file from the panel.

## PDF splitter: separate PDF pages or split PDF pages in blocks

This PDF splitter cuts one PDF into parts, and it works on one file at a time. To separate PDF pages into single files, choose "Every page into its own PDF (ZIP)". To split PDF pages into fixed blocks, choose "A new PDF every N pages (ZIP)". As a PDF page splitter it can also cut by ranges, such as 1-3,4-6,7-z. The pages are copied, not edited.

## Four ways to split: every page, every N pages, ranges, or pick pages

The tool offers four choices under "How to split". Use "Every page into its own PDF (ZIP)" to get one file per page. Use "A new PDF every N pages (ZIP)" with N from 1 to 500 to group pages into fixed blocks.

"Page ranges, one PDF for each range (ZIP)" builds one file per range you type, such as 1-3,4-6,7-z. "Pick pages into one PDF, in the order you type" builds a single new PDF from the pages you list, such as 1-3,5,r1.

## Split a PDF by page ranges

Ranges mode turns every comma-separated item into its own PDF. The input 1-3,4-6 makes two files, and a single number such as 5 makes a one-page file. Use a dash for a span and z for the last page.

Ranges are useful when you want chapters or sections as separate documents. Keep the list to 200 items or fewer.

## Extract pages from PDF files into one new PDF

Pick pages mode gives you one PDF made only from the pages you name. It is the right choice when you need a few pages, not a full set of parts. Type the pages you want, separated by commas, and the tool returns extracted-pages.pdf.

Pages are kept in the order typed, and a page can appear more than once. The result is still limited by the page limit for your account.

## How to extract pages from PDF files in three steps

Upload one PDF. Under "How to split", choose "Pick pages into one PDF, in the order you type". Type the pages you want, such as 2,5-7, and click Split PDF. You get extracted-pages.pdf with only those pages, so you can extract PDF pages without keeping the rest of the file.

## Reorder pages with the pick-pages mode

Pick pages mode also reorders. The input 5,3-4,1 gives page 5, then pages 3 and 4, then page 1. In our test, the same 6-page generated PDF gave a 4-page result in exactly that order.

Reordering only changes the sequence of pages in the new file. Pages are not edited. If you need a full reorder of a long document, check the output page by page before you rely on it.

## What the ZIP contains and how the files are named

Most split modes return a ZIP file named split-pages.zip. Every page mode uses names such as page-001.pdf. The every-N mode uses names such as pages-001-004.pdf, with the numbers padded to the length of the page count. Ranges mode uses names such as part-001-pages-001-002.pdf.

The ZIP is stored without compression because PDF pages are already compressed. In our test, a 6-page generated PDF of 124 KB split with the ranges 1-2,3,4-z gave a 125 KB ZIP with three PDFs. Sizes will vary with your file.

## Page numbers that do not exist

Page numbers start at 1, and zero is not valid. If you type a page past the end of the document, the job fails with a message such as "N is outside the document, which has M pages". The credits for that job are returned.

In our test, page 9 on a 2-page generated PDF failed this way. Check the page count in your file before you run the job, especially when you use z or r-numbers.

## Limits: size and pages

The free web tool allows up to 10 MB per file and up to 100 pages. Signed-in users get up to 50 MB per file and 500 pages. Without an account the file is uploaded with a human check, and each upload counts toward 40 uploads per day for each visitor.

The web tool allows 20 jobs per day for each visitor. A split can make at most 500 files, and a result can be up to 200 MB. The time limit is 30 seconds for an anonymous job and 60 seconds for a signed-in job.

## Encrypted and damaged files

Encrypted PDFs are refused. This includes files that are password protected or have permission restrictions, whatever the strength. No password is accepted, and the tool makes no attempt to open or break the protection.

A slightly damaged PDF is repaired automatically when possible, and the result panel says so. The option "Repair a slightly damaged PDF automatically" is on by default. If you turn it off, a damaged file is refused. A file that cannot be repaired is refused as well.

## What to check in the result

Check the page count first. The result panel reports pages in and out, and the file count. For a split, the counts should match the ranges or the page numbers you typed. The tool also checks the page count after writing and refuses a result that does not match.

Open a few of the output files. If your PDF has bookmarks, links, form fields, tags or metadata, check them, because those features have not been tested. Results vary by file, so do not assume a result is right without a look.

## Split a PDF from code

The API takes one PDF per job. First send the file as raw bytes with Content-Type application/pdf to https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/uploads. The answer contains an upload_id. Then send a JSON body with op, params and files to https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/pdf-jobs. For a split, use op pdf_split with params mode set to each, every (with every from 1 to 500), or ranges (with ranges). For "pick pages", use op pdf_extract with params pages.

Authorize with a Bearer token or the x-api-key header. Poll GET /v1/jobs/:id until the job finishes. Split returns a ZIP. Errors include 400 invalid_params, 413 file_too_large, 422 not_a_pdf, 404 upload_not_found, 402 insufficient_credits and 429 for rate limits. A failed job can return error_codes such as encrypted_pdf, corrupt_pdf, too_many_pages or page_out_of_range. The page shows a ready cURL, Node and Python example built from your settings. ## Privacy: what happens to your file

Your file is sent to our server, because nothing is processed in the browser. The file is used only to make the result. The working copy of your upload is deleted as soon as the job ends, whether it succeeds or fails.

In the free web tool, the result is deleted after 10 minutes, and the result panel shows how long it is kept. No history is kept. Download links are short-lived, so save the file when it is ready. You must have the right to use the files you upload, as the Acceptable Use Policy requires.
