# PNG to JPG Converter

> A free online tool that converts a PNG (or WebP, GIF or BMP) image to JPG at the same pixel size, with a quality setting and a background colour for transparent areas.

PNG to JPG conversion saves a PNG picture as a JPEG file, the format that uses the .jpg extension. This free converter needs no signup. Upload one image, check the preview, and download the JPG. The default target is JPEG; you can also pick PNG or WebP.

## Key facts

- Input: PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF or BMP, up to 5 MB in the free tool and 10 MB when signed in, and up to 16 MP (4096 x 4096); the type is read from the file content.
- Output: a JPG (JPEG) with the same width and height; quality 1 to 100 (default 80); JPEG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a background colour (white by default).
- In our test a transparent 1024 x 1024 px logo of 37 KB became a 25 KB JPG at quality 80, and a 7.5 MB PNG photograph became a 642 KB JPG; the test pictures were generated by our scripts.
- An animated file is converted from its first frame; the upload is deleted when the job ends and the result after 10 minutes; signed-in users pay 1 credit per image.
- Free without an account: up to 10 conversions per minute and 50 per day per visitor, no watermark. Signed in, each render costs 1 credit (100 free credits every month).
- Files are deleted automatically: 10 minutes after conversion without an account, 1 day with a free account.
- Developers can run the same render with POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/render and an API key (see the API docs page).

## How it works

1. Open the PNG to JPG page. The "Convert to" setting already starts on JPEG.
2. Choose your file. The tool accepts PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and BMP. Before upload, the browser checks the file type, size and pixel count, and shows a preview with the image size.
3. Check the quality setting (default 80). If your picture has transparent areas, check the background colour (default white).
4. Start the conversion and wait for the results panel. It shows the preview, file size, pixel size and whether transparent areas were filled.
5. Download the JPG from the results panel.

## How to convert PNG to JPG

Open the PNG to JPG page and choose your file. The "Convert to" setting already starts on JPEG, so you do not need to change it. The tool accepts PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and BMP files. Before the upload starts, your browser checks the file type, size and pixel count, and it shows a preview with the image size.

Next, set the quality if the default does not suit you. The default is 80. When the conversion finishes, the results panel shows a preview, the file size, the pixel size and whether transparent areas were filled. Download the JPG from that panel.

## What PNG to JPG conversion does

The converter decodes your PNG into pixels and then encodes those pixels again as JPEG. The picture keeps the same width and height in pixels. Nothing is cropped or resized.

This is not artificial intelligence. The conversion is done by sharp, an image library that runs on our servers, so the image is sent to our server and is not processed in your browser. JPG and JPEG are the same format. The tool lists it as JPEG, and the downloaded file has the extension .jpg.

## Why people convert PNG to JPG

PNG is lossless, so it keeps every pixel exactly. That is useful for logos, screenshots and diagrams, but it can make photographs very large. JPEG is lossy. In our test below, a photograph saved as JPEG was far smaller than the same pixels as PNG.

Some programs and upload forms ask for a specific image type. Check the requirements of the place where the file will go before you convert. If a form asks for JPEG, the JPG from this page is the file to upload.

## Transparent PNG to JPG

JPEG has no transparency. When you convert a transparent PNG to JPG, every transparent area is filled with the background colour. The default is white (#ffffff), and you can change it to any colour you choose.

In our test, a transparent logo of 1024 x 1024 px became a 25 KB JPG with a white background. With a black background (#000000), the same logo at quality 80 was 24 KB. The test picture was generated by our scripts, so your results will differ. If you need to keep transparency, keep the PNG or convert to WebP instead.

## Choosing the JPG quality

The quality setting runs from 1 to 100, and the default is 80. It applies only to JPEG output. A lower number makes a smaller file with more visible loss. A higher number keeps more detail and makes a larger file.

In our test, the transparent logo gave 19 KB at quality 60, 25 KB at quality 80 and 40 KB at quality 95. A flat illustration of 1600 x 1200 px gave 35 KB, 46 KB and 81 KB at the same three settings. Try quality 80 first. If the preview shows too much loss, raise the value and convert again.

## How much smaller is the JPG

JPG files are often much smaller than PNG files, but the amount depends on the picture. In our test, a synthetic photograph of 2000 x 1500 px was 7.5 MB as PNG. At quality 80 the same pixels saved as JPEG were 642 KB. The test pictures were generated by our scripts, not taken from real cameras.

A flat illustration shrinks less. A 1600 x 1200 px PNG of 90 KB became a 46 KB JPG at quality 80. At quality 95 the JPG was 81 KB, almost as large as the PNG. The PNG was already compact because the picture is flat colour, so the gain was smaller.

## When to keep the PNG

MDN recommends lossless encoding for screenshots, diagrams, logos and line art, and PNG is lossless. JPEG is lossy, so it is not the format MDN suggests for those pictures. In our test, a line art PNG of 1200 x 900 px and 257 KB became a 179 KB JPG at quality 80. Check the preview before you replace the original.

Every time you save a JPEG, the picture loses some detail. Converting a JPG to JPEG again only loses more. Keep your original PNG and create JPG copies only for the places that need them.

## PNG to JPEG and other input formats

You can use this page for PNG to JPEG conversion. The tool accepts PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and BMP files. It reads the type from the file content, not from the file name, so a file with the wrong extension still works if the content is a supported image.

If your file is already a JPG, converting it to JPEG again only loses more detail. Use the JPG file you already have. The tool does not accept SVG, PDF, TIFF, HEIC or AVIF files.

## Animated and rotated files

An animated GIF or WebP is converted from its first frame only. The result is a still image, so the animation is lost.

A phone photo that is stored rotated, using an EXIF orientation tag, is turned upright in the result. Camera and location tags, including EXIF and GPS data, are not copied into the JPG.

## Size and file limits

The free web tool accepts up to 5 MB per image. You can convert 30 images per day per visitor. Each image can be up to 16 MP (4096 x 4096).

If you sign in, you can convert files up to 10 MB each. Each conversion uses 1 credit per image, plus 1 credit for each 5 MB of result after the first 5 MB. The result must be 20 MB or smaller. If it is larger, the job fails with an "output too large" message instead of returning a cut-off file. Failed and timed-out jobs are refunded.

## PNG to JPG from code

The API takes one image per request. Send the raw image bytes as the body, not JSON or multipart, to POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/image-jobs. Set the Content-Type to match the input, such as image/png. Use the query string to set op=image_convert and format=jpeg. Add quality for 1 to 100, with a default of 80, and background as %23rrggbb, with a default of %23ffffff.

Send your API key as Authorization: Bearer followed by the key. The response is 202 with a job_id. Poll GET /v1/jobs/:id until the status is succeeded, failed or timeout, then download the file from the short-lived download_url. The page shows a ready cURL, Node and Python example below the tool. There is no batch endpoint, and webhooks are not available yet.

## Privacy and your file

Your uploaded image is used only to make the converted file. It is deleted as soon as the job ends, whether it succeeds or fails. The converted file is kept for 10 minutes on the free web tool, and no history is kept. Download links are short-lived.

You must have the right to use any image you upload. Read the Acceptable Use Policy before you convert pictures that belong to someone else.

## Questions

### Can I convert PNG to JPG for free?

Yes. The web tool is free and needs no account. Anonymous use needs a human check (Cloudflare Turnstile). Signed-in users skip the check and use credits. You can change PNG to JPG as often as the daily limit allows.

### What happens to a transparent PNG when I convert it to JPG?

The transparent areas are filled with the background colour, which is white by default. You can choose another colour before you convert. JPEG cannot keep transparency.

### Is a JPG smaller than a PNG?

Usually, yes, especially for photographs. In our test a 7.5 MB photo PNG became a 642 KB JPG at quality 80. Flat illustrations shrink less, and results depend on the picture.

### What quality should I use?

Start with 80, the default. Lower values make smaller files with more visible loss. Raise the value if you see marks around text or edges.

### Is PNG to JPG lossless?

No. JPEG is lossy, so each save removes some detail. PNG is lossless, so keep your original PNG if you may need it again.

### Will the image get smaller in pixels?

No. The JPG has the same width and height as the PNG. The tool does not resize or crop the picture.

### Is JPG the same as JPEG?

Yes. They are the same format. The tool lists it as JPEG, and the downloaded file uses the .jpg extension.

### Can I get the transparency back?

No. A JPG has no alpha channel, so the transparent areas are not stored. Keep the original PNG if you need transparency.

### What happens to an animated file?

Only the first frame is converted. The result is a still JPG, so the animation is lost.

### How big can the PNG be?

The free web tool accepts up to 5 MB per image, and signed-in users can use up to 10 MB. The result must be 20 MB or smaller. A JPG is usually much smaller than the PNG it came from.

### How long is my file kept?

Your uploaded image is deleted when the job ends. The converted file is kept for 10 minutes on the free web tool, and no history is kept.

### Can I convert PNG to JPG in code?

Yes. Send the raw PNG bytes to POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/image-jobs with op=image_convert and format=jpeg in the query string. Use your API key as a Bearer token.
