# PDF to JPG Converter > A free online tool that draws the pages of a PDF as JPG images with Poppler, at 72 to 300 DPI, as one image for one page or a ZIP for several pages. This free PDF to JPG converter turns each page of a PDF into a JPG image you can open, share or place in a document. Convert a PDF to JPG online with no signup: choose the pages, the resolution and the JPG quality, then download the result. It works on one PDF at a time. ## Key facts - Input: one PDF up to 10 MB without an account (50 MB signed in); up to 10 pages are turned into images per job without an account (100 signed in), more are refused and a page range picks the pages; encrypted PDFs are refused. - Settings: JPG quality 1 to 100 (85 by default), resolution 72, 96, 150 (default), 200 or 300 DPI, JPG or PNG, and the pages to convert; the result is page.jpg for one page or a ZIP of page-001.jpg and so on. - A page larger than 25 megapixels is drawn at a lower DPI and the result panel says which pages; fonts not embedded in the PDF are replaced, and Chinese, Japanese or Korean text without embedded fonts can look wrong. - In our test a generated 6 page text PDF of 60 KB gave 1240 x 1754 px images at 150 DPI of 80, 76 and 74 KB for pages 1 to 3 (ZIP 230 KB); results vary with the file. - API: POST the PDF to https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/uploads, then POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/pdf-jobs with op pdf_to_image and the upload id, and poll GET /v1/jobs/:id. - Free without an account: 20 PDF jobs per day per visitor, no watermark. Signed in, each job costs 1 credit, plus 1 credit for each started 10 pages beyond the first 10 and for each started 20 MB of result beyond the first 20 MB (100 free credits every month). - Files are deleted automatically: 10 minutes after conversion without an account, 1 day with a free account. ## How it works 1. Upload one PDF file. The tool checks that the file really is a PDF. 2. Leave Pages empty to convert all pages, or type a range such as 1-3,5. 3. Choose the Image format (JPG is the default) and a Resolution. 150 DPI is the default. 4. Set the JPG quality if you use JPG. The default is 85. 5. Click "Convert to JPG" and download your file. ## How to convert a PDF to JPG To change PDF to JPG, start by choosing your PDF. The tool reads the first bytes of the file to confirm it is a PDF, so a file with a renamed extension will be refused. Then click "Convert to JPG" and wait for the result panel. You can do it in a few clicks without creating an account. The result panel shows a preview when the result is one image. For several pages, it shows how many PDF pages were turned into JPG images and at which resolution. ## Convert all pages or only some pages Leave the Pages field empty to convert every page of the PDF. To convert part of a document, type page numbers or ranges such as 1-3,5. Use z for the last page, for example 2-z. Page numbers start at 1, and zero is not valid. If you type a page number past the end of the document, the job fails and your credits are returned. The file name of each image keeps the page number from the PDF, such as page-002.jpg. - Use 1-3,5 to pick pages 1, 2, 3 and 5. - Use 2-z to convert from page 2 to the last page. ## Choose the resolution (DPI) The resolution sets how many pixels each page gets. The choices are 72, 96, 150 (default), 200 and 300 DPI. Pixels are the page size in inches multiplied by the DPI. In our test, an A4 page gave 595 x 842 px at 72 DPI, 1240 x 1754 px at 150 DPI and 2479 x 3508 px at 300 DPI. Higher DPI gives sharper images but larger files. Choose a lower value for a small preview and a higher value when you need fine detail. ## JPG quality and file size The JPG quality slider goes from 1 to 100, and the default is 85. The slider applies only when you choose JPG. Lower quality makes smaller files, and higher quality keeps more detail. In our test on a generated 6 page text PDF, page 1 at 150 DPI was 80 KB as JPG and 56 KB as PNG. The same page at 72 DPI as JPG was 26 KB. Pages with photos give much larger files, so results vary with the file. ## JPG or PNG: which to pick JPG is lossy and works well for pages with photos. PNG keeps every pixel as it is drawn, so it suits text, line art and pages with sharp edges. JPG is the default on this page. Both formats come from the same PDF to image tool, so you can switch the Image format and run it again. PNG is not always larger. In our test, a text page was smaller as PNG than as JPG at 150 DPI. Try both settings on your file and compare the file sizes in the result panel. - Choose JPG for photos and smaller files. - Choose PNG for text and line art. ## Limits: pages, size and very large pages Each job has a page limit. If you ask for more pages than the limit, the job is refused with an error that tells you to choose pages. Type a page range instead, so the job stays within the limit. The tool never cuts pages off silently. Each page is limited to 25 megapixels and 16384 px on a side. A larger page is drawn at a lower DPI automatically, and the result panel says which pages were changed. For example, a page of 200 x 200 inches is drawn at about 25 DPI instead of 300. All images from one job together are limited to 100 MB. If you hit this limit, use JPG, a lower DPI or fewer pages. ## Fonts and what the images look like Poppler, an open-source PDF drawing program, draws each page on our server as the PDF describes it. Fonts that are not embedded in the PDF are replaced with similar fonts. This can change how the text looks. Chinese, Japanese or Korean text in a PDF without embedded fonts can look wrong, because the server has no CJK fonts for that case. A PDF with embedded fonts should look correct. We have not tested a CJK PDF, so check your own file. Pages are drawn on white, as the PDF specifies. ## Encrypted and damaged files Password-protected PDFs and PDFs with permission restrictions are refused. No password is accepted, and no attempt is made to open or break the protection. Remove the protection in the source program first, then upload the file again. Damaged PDFs are repaired automatically when possible. The result panel tells you when a repair was made. The setting "Repair a slightly damaged PDF automatically" is on by default. With it off, a damaged file is refused. ## Convert a PDF to JPG from code You can call the PDF tools from your own code. First send each file as raw bytes to https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/uploads with Content-Type application/pdf. The answer contains an upload_id. Then send a JSON request with op, params and files to https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/pdf-jobs, and poll GET /v1/jobs/:id until the job succeeds, fails or times out. Use Authorization: Bearer `` or the x-api-key header. An upload can be used once and expires after 1 hour if unused. Possible errors include 400 invalid_params, 413 file_too_large, 422 not_a_pdf, 404 upload_not_found, 402 insufficient_credits and 429 rate limited. A failed job can return error_code values such as encrypted_pdf, corrupt_pdf, too_many_pages, page_out_of_range and too_many_pixels. ## Privacy: what happens to your file Your file is sent to our server, and the work is done there. The uploaded file is used only to make the result. The working copy of your upload is deleted as soon as the job ends, whether it succeeds or fails. The result is deleted after 10 minutes in the free web tool. The result panel shows how long it is kept. No history is kept, and download links are short-lived. You must have the right to use the files you upload under our Acceptable Use Policy. ## Questions ### Can I convert a PDF to JPG for free? Yes. The free web tool lets you convert PDF to JPG with no signup, and you can run 20 PDF jobs per day per visitor. ### How do I convert only one page of a PDF to JPG? Type the page number in the Pages field, for example 4. You can also type a range such as 4-6 or use z for the last page. ### Which DPI should I choose? Start with 150 DPI, the default. Use 300 DPI when you need fine detail and can accept a larger file, and 72 DPI for a small preview. ### Why is my PDF to JPG file so large? The file size depends on the resolution, the JPG quality and the content. Pages with photos give much larger files than text pages. Lower the DPI or the quality, or choose a range of pages. ### Can I convert a PDF with many pages? Yes, within the page limit for each job. If you ask for more pages than the limit, the job is refused, so type a page range to pick the pages you need. ### Will the text in the JPG still be selectable? No. Text in the PDF becomes pixels, so it cannot be selected or searched. The Image to Text tool of this site can read text from a picture. ### Why do Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters look wrong? This happens when the PDF has no embedded fonts, because the server has no CJK fonts for that case. A PDF with embedded fonts should look correct, but we have not tested a CJK PDF. ### Can I convert a PDF that has a password? No. Encrypted PDFs are refused, and no password is accepted. Remove the protection in the program that made the file, then upload it again. ### Can I turn the JPG files back into a PDF? Yes. Use JPG to PDF to put images back into a PDF. Each image must be within the limits for that tool. ### Can I convert a PDF to JPG in my own code? Yes. Upload the file to the uploads endpoint, start a PDF job, and poll the job until it finishes.
