# JPG to WebP Converter

> A free online tool that converts a JPG to WebP (lossy or lossless) with a quality setting and an optional smaller size.

Convert JPG to WebP with this free online tool, and you do not need to sign up. Upload one JPG, keep the default lossy WebP at quality 80, or pick Lossless WebP. The converter returns a WebP file you can download, and you can also choose PNG or JPEG as the output. Results vary by picture, so check the file size and the look before you use the file.

## Key facts

- Input: JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP or TIFF, up to 5 MB in the free tool and 10 MB when signed in, and up to 16 MP (4096 x 4096); the type is read from the file content, and HEIC, SVG, PDF and camera RAW files are not accepted.
- Output: a WebP with the same width and height unless you choose a smaller size; lossy by default at quality 80 (1 to 100) or lossless; camera and location tags are not copied, and a picture stored rotated is turned upright. A JPG is already lossy, so converting it loses a little more.
- In our test a generated 1600 x 1200 px photograph saved as a 465 KB JPEG became a 236 KB WebP at quality 80, 99 KB at quality 60 and a 2.0 MB lossless WebP; the test pictures were generated by our scripts.
- The upload is deleted when the job ends and the result after 10 minutes; signed-in users pay 1 credit per image.
- Free without an account: up to 10 conversions per minute and 50 per day per visitor, no watermark. Signed in, each render costs 1 credit (100 free credits every month).
- Files are deleted automatically: 10 minutes after conversion without an account, 1 day with a free account.
- Developers can run the same render with POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/render and an API key (see the API docs page).

## How it works

1. Choose the JPG file you want to convert. JPG, JPEG and JFIF files are all accepted.
2. Check the preview and the image size shown before you convert.
3. Leave "Convert to" set to WebP and quality at 80, or change the quality to suit your picture.
4. Tick Lossless WebP only if you need lossless output. Expect a larger file.
5. Download the result when the conversion finishes.

## How to convert JPG to WebP

To convert a JPG file, upload it to the tool and leave the target set to WebP. The default is lossy WebP at quality 80, a place to start. The tool does the rest on our server and returns a WebP file.

Before you start, look at the preview and the image size shown in the tool. These confirm that the file was read correctly. If the file is refused, check that it really is a JPG and not a different format with a .jpg name.

- Use one JPG per conversion.
- Check the size shown before you convert.

## What JPG to WebP conversion does

A JPG to WebP conversion reads your JPG and writes the same picture as a WebP file. The tool uses the same converter as the PNG to WebP page, opened on a JPG upload with WebP as the target. You can also pick PNG or JPEG as the output if you need one of those instead.

Because a JPG is already lossy, converting it re-encodes pixels that were already compressed. The new file can lose a little more detail, and the amount depends on the quality you choose. The pixel size stays the same unless you pick a smaller size in the tool.

## Why people convert JPG to WebP

Some people convert JPG to WebP to make pages load less data. Google reports that lossy WebP images are 25 to 34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at an equivalent SSIM quality index. MDN says lossy WebP images are on average 25-35% smaller than JPEG images of visually similar compression levels. These are figures from those sources, not from our tests.

Your own results will vary. A smaller file is not always what you get, and the saving depends on the picture and the quality setting. Test a few of your own images before you change a whole site.

## Choosing the WebP quality

Quality sets how much detail the WebP keeps. The range is 1 to 100, and the default is 80. Higher numbers keep more detail and make a bigger file. Lower numbers make a smaller file with more visible loss.

In our test, a generated 1600 x 1200 photograph saved as JPEG at quality 90 was 465 KB. The same picture as WebP came out at 99 KB at quality 60, 236 KB at quality 80, and 467 KB at quality 90. Quality 100 gave 838 KB. Start at 80, look at the result, and move the number only if you need to.

## JPG to WebP: file size

File size depends on the picture, the quality and the size of the pixels. In our test, the 465 KB JPG gave a WebP of 236 KB at quality 80, about half the JPG. The same picture re-saved as JPEG at quality 80 was 305 KB, so the WebP was smaller in this test, though quality 80 does not mean the same thing in the two formats.

Lossless WebP was much larger in the same test, at 2,011 KB (2.0 MB). A PNG of that picture was 4,764 KB (4.7 MB). Results vary by picture, so compare the size of your own output with your original before you decide.

## Lossy or lossless WebP

Lossy WebP is the default. It throws away some detail to make a smaller file, and the quality setting controls how much. It suits photographs when a small loss is acceptable.

Lossless WebP keeps the pixels it is given exactly, with no further loss. Choose it only when you need lossless output, and expect a larger file. Remember that your source is a JPG, which is already lossy, so lossless output keeps the JPG's existing detail rather than adding back what was lost.

- Lossy WebP: default, quality 80, smaller file.
- Lossless WebP: optional, larger file.

## Browser and app support for WebP

WebP is supported by Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari. Safari needs version 14 or later on macOS Big Sur 11 or later. MDN notes that WebP "does not have deep historical support", so some older software and upload forms may not accept it.

Before you publish, test the WebP in the browsers and programs your visitors use. If a program does not accept WebP, convert the file to JPEG or PNG with this tool and use that copy instead.

## Rotated photos, camera tags and transparency

A photo can be stored rotated, with an EXIF orientation tag that tells viewers which way is up. The tool applies that orientation, so the WebP comes out upright. In our test, a photo marked with EXIF orientation 6 came out upright at 1200 x 1600 as a 241 KB WebP.

Camera and location tags, such as EXIF and GPS data, are not copied into the result. A JPG has no transparency, so there is no alpha channel to keep. If you need a transparent picture, convert from a PNG instead.

## Make the WebP smaller in pixels

The Size option makes the picture smaller in pixels. You can set a percent, a longest side or a box, and the tool never enlarges the picture. This changes the file size as well as the pixel dimensions, so it is a separate step from quality.

In our test, a longest side of 800 px at WebP quality 80 gave a 16 KB file at 800 x 600 px. Use this option when the picture will be shown small, and keep the original size when it will be shown large. For a PNG source, see the PNG to WebP page.

## Which files the converter accepts

The converter accepts PNG, JPG (also .jpeg and .jfif), WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP and TIFF. It does not accept SVG, PDF, HEIC/HEIF, BigTIFF or camera RAW files. The file type is read from the file content, so a renamed file is read as what it really is. A text or corrupt file renamed to an image extension is refused with an "unsupported image" message.

Free use allows up to 5 MB per image and 30 images per day per visitor. Signed-in users can upload up to 10 MB per image. Pictures can have up to 16 MP (4096 x 4096) per image. Signed-in users pay 1 credit per image, plus 1 credit for each 5 MB of result after the first 5 MB. If the result would be larger than 20 MB, the job fails with an "output too large" message instead of returning a cut-off file.

## JPG to WebP from code

To convert JPG to WebP in code, send a POST request to https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/image-jobs. The body is the raw image bytes, not JSON or multipart. Set Content-Type to image/jpeg for a JPG, and send your API key as Authorization: Bearer `<API key>` or in the x-api-key header.

Use op=image_convert with format=webp. Other settings include quality (1 to 100, default 80), lossless, keep_transparency and background. The API takes one request per image, and there is no batch endpoint. The request returns a 202 response with a job_id. Poll GET /v1/jobs/:id until the job succeeds or fails, then use the short-lived download_url. The page shows a ready cURL, Node and Python example below the tool. See the image convert section of the API documentation for the full list.

## Privacy: what happens to your file

Your image is sent to our server, not processed in your browser. It is handled by sharp (Apache-2.0), which is built on the libvips library. This is ordinary image processing, not artificial intelligence.

The uploaded image is used only to make the result, and it is deleted as soon as the job ends, whether it succeeds or fails. The result is deleted after 10 minutes in the free web tool. No history is kept, and download links are short-lived. You must have the right to use any image you upload, as set out in our Acceptable Use Policy.

## Questions

### Can I convert JPG to WebP for free?

Yes, the free web tool lets you convert JPG to WebP without a paid account. Anonymous use includes a human check, and free use has the limits shown above.

### Is a WebP smaller than a JPG?

It can be, but results vary by picture. In our test, a JPG at quality 90 became a WebP of about half its size at quality 80.

### What quality should I use?

Start with the default of 80 for lossy WebP. Raise the number if the result looks too soft, and lower it if the file is too large.

### Is JPG to WebP lossless?

No, the default conversion is lossy. You can choose Lossless WebP, but the output will be larger.

### Should I tick Lossless WebP?

Only if you need lossless output. The lossless file is much larger than the lossy one, and a JPG source is already lossy.

### Is JPEG the same as JPG for this tool?

Yes. JPEG and JPG are the same format, so JPEG to WebP works the same way as JPG to WebP here. The tool also accepts .jfif. It reads the file type from the file content, not the name.

### Will every program open the WebP?

No, not every program does. WebP is supported by major browsers, but some older software and upload forms do not accept it.

### Will the picture change size?

The pixel size stays the same unless you pick a smaller size in the Size option. The file size changes with the format and quality.

### What happens to camera and location data?

Camera and location tags, such as EXIF and GPS, are not copied into the result. The photo is still turned upright if it was stored rotated.

### Can I convert WebP back to JPG?

Yes, the converter accepts WebP files and lets you pick JPEG as the output. Converting back to JPEG re-encodes the picture, so some detail can be lost.

### How long is my file kept?

Your uploaded image is deleted as soon as the job ends. The result is deleted after 10 minutes in the free web tool.

### Can I convert JPG to WebP in code?

Yes, send the raw JPG bytes to the image jobs endpoint with op=image_convert and format=webp. The page shows ready cURL, Node and Python examples below the tool.
