# JFIF to PNG: Convert Your .jfif File for Free

## How to convert JFIF to PNG

To convert a .jfif to PNG, open the tool, pick your .jfif file and keep "Convert to" set to PNG. Start the conversion and wait for the result panel. The panel shows the new file, and you can download it from there.

The tool reads the file type from the file content, not from the name. A file that is really a PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, TIFF or AVIF is converted as that type. Results vary with the picture, so check the output before you replace your original.

## What JFIF to PNG conversion does

A JFIF to PNG conversion decodes the stored picture and writes it again as PNG. The pixel size stays the same, and the picture is not changed further. An optional Size setting can make the picture smaller.

PNG is lossless, so the PNG file matches the pixels in your .jfif exactly. It cannot add back the detail that the JPEG compression removed. Expect a bigger file, not a better image.

## What a JFIF file is, in plain words

JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format. It describes the files most people call JPEG images. In practice, a .jfif file is a JPEG file with a different name ending.

JPEG is a format for compressed photos, and it is lossy. Each save can remove a little more detail. JPEG files do not have an alpha channel, so a .jfif picture has no transparent areas.

## Why people convert JFIF to PNG

People convert JFIF to PNG when a form, editor or workflow asks for PNG. Some tools accept PNG but not .jfif. A PNG copy can also be useful when you want to avoid saving the picture as JPEG again.

## What PNG cannot fix

PNG cannot undo JPEG artefacts. Blocky edges, colour blur and soft detail stay in the picture. The converter does not remove them.

## JFIF to PNG: file size

A PNG of a photograph is often much larger than the .jfif it came from. In our tests, a flat 1200 x 900 illustration saved as a .jfif at 49 KB became a 306 KB PNG. A generated 1600 x 1200 test photograph saved as a .jfif at 465 KB became a 4.7 MB PNG.

The same test photograph saved as JPG at quality 80 came out at 305 KB, and as WebP at quality 80 it came out at 236 KB. Sizes depend on the picture, so results vary.

## JFIF to PNG or JFIF to JPG

Choose JFIF to PNG when you need lossless output or a PNG file. Choose JFIF to JPG when a form only accepts .jpg, because a .jfif is already a JPEG. The JPG copy is much smaller for photographs.

You can also pick WebP in the "Convert to" list. WebP is lossy in this tool, so it is a different trade-off from PNG.

## Rotated photos, camera tags and colour

If a photo is stored rotated with EXIF orientation, the converter turns it upright. A 1600 x 1200 test file with orientation 6 came out as a 1200 x 1600 PNG. Camera and location tags are not copied into the result.

A CMYK JPEG comes out as an ordinary RGB picture. In our test, a 1.3 MB CMYK JPEG became a 4.9 MB PNG.

## Transparency and PNG

A .jfif has no transparent areas, so the PNG will not have a transparent background.

PNG supports transparency, but this conversion adds no transparent pixels. If you need a transparent background, you must make it in an editor first, then save the picture as PNG.

## Which files the converter accepts

The converter accepts PNG, JPG (also .jpeg and .jfif), WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP and TIFF. It does not accept SVG, PDF, HEIC/HEIF, BigTIFF or camera RAW files. AVIF and TIFF are read as input only, and TIFF is not an output.

The free web tool allows up to 5 MB per image and up to 16 MP (4096 x 4096) per image. Signed-in users can convert up to 10 MB per image. Anonymous use is limited to 30 images per day per visitor, and signed-in users pay 1 credit per image, plus 1 credit for each 5 MB of result after the first 5 MB. Each result is limited to 20 MB; a larger result fails with an "output too large" message.

## JFIF to PNG from code

The API converts images with op=image_convert. Set format=png for PNG output. Other settings include quality, lossless, keep_transparency and background, which are sent in the query string.

Send the raw image bytes as the request body, not JSON or multipart. Set Content-Type to image/jpeg for a .jfif file. Send your key in the Authorization: Bearer header or as x-api-key. ## Privacy: what happens to your file

Your image is sent to our server. It is not processed in the browser. The processing uses sharp with libvips, which is ordinary image processing, not artificial intelligence.

The uploaded image is used only to make the result and is deleted as soon as the job ends, whether it succeeds or fails. The result is deleted after 10 minutes in the free web tool. No history is kept, and download links are short-lived. Use the tool only with pictures you have the right to use.
