# EPUB to PDF

> A free online tool that converts an EPUB e-book (also MOBI, AZW, AZW3 and FB2) to a PDF with the page size, font and margins you choose; books with DRM are refused.

EPUB to PDF turns an EPUB e-book into a PDF file that you can print, read on any device, or send to someone. Choose the page size, the font and the margins, convert, and download the PDF. It works without an account for a book up to 20 MB. It also reads MOBI, AZW, AZW3 and FB2 files. Books with DRM are refused: we never remove DRM.

## How it works

1. Choose your EPUB file, or drop it on the box. MOBI, AZW, AZW3 and FB2 files work too.
2. Pick the page size (Letter, A4, A5 and others), the font and the font size. The defaults are Letter, serif, 12 pt and an 18 mm margin.
3. Choose whether you want a cover page, page numbers and a contents page at the end.
4. Click "Convert to PDF". A short story takes seconds and a long novel up to a minute or more.
5. Download the PDF and open it to check the result.

## How to convert EPUB to PDF

Choose your EPUB, set the page size and font, and click the button. The page uploads the book, converts it and gives you the finished PDF to download, with the number of pages and the size of the file. The download link is short-lived, so save the PDF when it is ready.

The PDF is made from the text and pictures of the book. Headings, bold and italic text, lists, tables and pictures are kept, and the text in the PDF stays real text that you can select, search and copy. In our sample, a search of the PDF found the words of a heading and of a table cell.

## Page size, font and margins

An EPUB has no pages of its own: the reading app lays the text out to fit the screen. A PDF has fixed pages, so you choose how they look. The page size can be Letter, A4, A5, A6, B5, Legal, 6 x 9 in, 5 x 8 in or 5.5 x 8.5 in. The margin is from 5 to 40 mm (18 mm by default), and the font size from 8 to 24 pt (12 pt by default). The font family is serif, sans-serif or monospace.

A smaller page or a larger font gives more pages. In our test, the same book gave 6 pages on Letter at 12 pt and 9 pages on A5 at 11 pt with a 14 mm margin. For a printout, A4 or Letter with the default margin is a safe start. To read on a phone, A6 or A5 pages are easier to read than a full Letter page.

- Page numbers are on by default and can be switched off.
- The cover page is the cover image of the book, if it has one; you can leave it out.
- The contents page is off by default; when it is on, it goes at the end of the PDF.

## What the PDF looks like

The fonts are built in: serif, sans-serif or monospace, plus fonts for Chinese, Japanese and Korean text. A font that the book names but that is not installed here is replaced by one of these. The fonts that are used are embedded in the PDF, so it looks the same on every device.

The conversion runs without internet access, so a book cannot load anything from another site while it is converted. We have not tested fixed-layout EPUBs (for example comics or picture books with text placed on the page), so check the result before you rely on it for one.

## EPUB files with DRM

Some e-books are protected with DRM, a lock that ties the file to a store or an app. This tool does not remove DRM and never will. If the book has DRM, the page says so and nothing is converted, and a refused book does not use up credits. The check reads the file itself, so it does not depend on the name of the file.

Books without DRM convert normally. These are books you made yourself or exported from your own library, books from stores and publishers that sell without DRM, and books in the public domain.

## Limits: size, length and time

A book can be up to 20 MB without an account and 50 MB when you are signed in. The text of the book can be up to 768 KB without an account and 1 MB signed in, and one chapter file inside an EPUB can be up to 640 KB. In our test, 1 MB of text made a PDF of 283 pages on Letter. The PDF can have up to 600 pages without an account, 1,200 on the free plan and 2,000 on a paid plan. A conversion is stopped after 120 seconds.

A book over a limit is refused with a message that says which limit, and nothing is cut off. Pictures do not count toward the text limit, so a picture book can be big in bytes and still convert. In our test, a generated book with 40 large pictures (45 MB) gave a PDF of 120 pages and 41 MB.

Each visitor without an account can convert 5 books a day. Signed-in jobs cost 2 credits for a PDF of up to 200 pages, plus 1 credit for each further started 200 pages. You get 100 free credits every month. Failed and timed-out jobs are refunded in full.

## How long it takes

In our tests on a development machine, an invented novel of 142 pages took about 19 to 24 seconds as an EPUB. The time grows with the number of chapter files, because each one is laid out in turn, and a long book with many chapters can take a minute or more. These times were measured on a laptop, not on the live servers, so they can differ here.

## FB2 and other e-book formats

The same page reads FB2 files (FictionBook), MOBI, AZW and AZW3 files, and it finds the format from the content of the file. FB2 to PDF works the same way as EPUB to PDF: choose the .fb2 file and convert it with the same settings. For Kindle files see MOBI to PDF and AZW3 to PDF. The tool goes in one direction only: it makes a PDF from an e-book and cannot turn a PDF back into an EPUB. It does not read DjVu, LIT or DOCX files, or a PDF.

## Convert EPUB to PDF from code

You can run the same conversion with the API in three steps. First send the book as raw bytes to https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/uploads with Content-Type application/octet-stream. The answer includes an upload_id. Then send a POST to https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/pdf-jobs with JSON that sets op to ebook_to_pdf, your params, and files as a list with that one upload ID. The endpoint is called pdf-jobs for historical reasons; it also takes e-books.

Poll GET /v1/jobs/:id until the job succeeds or fails. The download_url is a short-lived signed link. Authorize with Bearer `<API key>` or x-api-key. The page shows a ready cURL, Node and Python example built from your settings. For the general API, see /docs/. The errors are drm_protected, unsupported_input, corrupt_input, file_too_large, book_too_large, too_many_pages, archive_unsafe, timeout, memory_limit and output_limit.

## Privacy: what happens to your book

Your book is sent to our server, and the conversion happens there. The uploaded book is used only to make the PDF, and the working copy is deleted as soon as the job ends, whether it succeeds or fails. Without an account, the PDF is deleted after 10 minutes; signed-in results are kept for the time shown in the result panel. A record of each job is kept, and signed-in users can see their jobs in the dashboard. Download links are short-lived.
