# Combine Images

> A free online tool that combines 2 to 20 pictures into one, side by side, stacked or in a grid, with spacing and a background color, as PNG, JPG or WebP.

Combine Images joins two or more pictures into one. Put them side by side, stack them, or lay them out in a grid, then set the space between them, the background color and the size. You can use this tool to merge two images or up to 20, and you do not need an account for a basic job.

## Key facts

- Input: 2 to 20 pictures (PNG, JPG, WebP or TIFF), each up to 5 MB without an account (10 MB signed in) and 16 MP (4096 x 4096); all together up to 20 MB and 32 MP without an account (60 MB and 64 MP signed in); an animated WebP gives its first frame only.
- Settings: side by side, stacked or a grid with 1 to 20 columns; space between images and margin from 0 to 500 px; background color or transparent (PNG and WebP); alignment; keep each size or use the same height, width or box (whole picture or cropped to fill); PNG, JPG or WebP output.
- The result can be up to 40 MP and 20 MB; a PNG of many photos can pass 20 MB, which fails and is refunded, so JPG or WebP is the way for photos. Pictures that are not resized are copied pixel for pixel. It is not a collage designer: no templates, text or stickers.
- In our test three generated JPG pictures (1200 x 800, 800 x 1200 and 1000 x 1000 px, 60 KB together) combined side by side with the same height gave one 2597 x 832 px JPG of 65 KB; results vary with the pictures.
- API: upload each picture to https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/uploads, then POST op image_combine with params and the upload IDs to https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/pdf-jobs, and poll GET /v1/jobs/:id.
- Free without an account: 30 jobs per day per visitor, no watermark. Signed in, each job costs 1 credit, plus 1 credit for each started 5 MB of result beyond the first 5 MB (100 free credits every month).
- Files are deleted automatically: 10 minutes after conversion without an account, 1 day with a free account.

## How it works

1. Choose 2 to 20 images, PNG, JPG, WebP or TIFF. You can pick several at once or drag them into the list.
2. Drag the images, or use the arrows, into the order you want. The first image goes first, at the left or at the top.
3. Choose side by side, stacked or a grid, then set the space between the images, the margin, the alignment and the background color.
4. Optionally give all images the same height, width or box. Check the layout preview and the size of the result.
5. Choose PNG, JPG or WebP, click "Combine Images", and download the result.

## How to combine images

Use this tool to combine images into one picture. Add your images, set the order, choose a layout and click the button. The page draws a small preview of the layout before you run the job, and it shows the size of the result in pixels. If the page shows a warning, change the setting first.

The result panel shows the combined picture, its size in pixels, its file size and the credits used. The file is named combined.png, combined.jpg or combined.webp. The download link is short-lived, so save the file when it is ready.

## Side by side, stacked or in a grid

Side by side puts the images in one row, from left to right. Stacked puts them in one column, from top to bottom. A grid fills rows from left to right, then continues on the next row. The order of the list is the order in the result. To put two pictures side by side, add both and keep the default layout.

For a grid you can choose the number of columns, from 1 to 20. If you leave it empty, the tool uses the square root of the number of images, rounded up. A grid with 5 images and 3 columns has two rows, and the empty cell at the end shows the background color. A column is as wide as its widest image, and a row is as high as its highest image.

- Side by side, with the same height, gives one row of pictures.
- Stacked, with the same width, gives one long column.
- A grid with boxes of one size gives even rows and columns.

## Spacing, margin and background color

Space between images and margin around the result are in pixels, each from 0 to 500. The default is 0 for both, so the images touch. Pick any background color. It shows in the space between images, in the margin and in empty cells.

Choose Transparent to keep the space transparent. That works for PNG and WebP, but not for JPG, because JPG has no transparency. In our test, two pictures with 20 px between them and a transparent background gave a PNG with transparent space between them. A picture with semi-transparent areas is blended onto the background color, and the result panel says which pictures had transparent areas.

## Same height, same width or same box

By default each image keeps its own size, and it is not resized at all. Pictures that are not resized are copied as they are. In our test, two PNG pictures of 1200 x 800 and 1000 x 1000 px combined without resizing gave a PNG of 2200 x 1000 px in which both pictures were identical to the originals, pixel for pixel.

To make the pictures match, choose Same height (for a row), Same width (for a column) or Same box. If you leave the size empty, the tool uses the smallest image, so no image is enlarged. Type a size to choose your own. In our test, pictures of 1200 x 800, 800 x 1200 and 1000 x 1000 px with Same height gave widths of 1200, 533 and 800 px, all 800 px high. Enlarged images can look soft, and the result panel tells you which ones were enlarged.

With Same box, every image is placed in a box of the same size. If you leave the box empty, it uses the smallest width and the smallest height of your images. Show the whole image keeps the shape of each image and leaves empty space in the box. Fill the box crops the edges, from the middle, so the box is full. In our test, four pictures in 600 x 400 px boxes with Fill the box gave a 2 x 2 grid of 1208 x 808 px.

## Alignment and the order of the images

When images have different sizes, alignment decides where each one sits in its row, column or cell. In a row it is top, middle or bottom, in a column it is left, center or right, and in a grid it works in both directions. The default is the middle. When the leftover space is an odd number of pixels, the extra pixel goes to the bottom or the right.

Drag an image in the list or use the arrows to move it. You can remove an image with the X button. The first image in the list is placed first.

## JPG merge, JPEG merge and PNG, WebP output

Choose the type of the result with Save as. PNG keeps every pixel as it is, and it is the right choice for screenshots and graphics. JPG and WebP are smaller for photos, and they have a quality slider that starts at 90. The type of the inputs does not matter, so you can combine JPG files, merge PNG files, or mix JPG, PNG, WebP and TIFF files in one job. That makes this page a JPG merge, JPEG merge and PNG merge tool in one. If you want a JPG combiner, add your JPG files and choose JPG in Save as.

The result can be at most 40 MP and 20 MB. A PNG of many photos can be bigger than 20 MB, and then the job fails with an "output too large" message and the credits are returned. In our test, 20 pictures of 1600 x 1250 px (about 40 MP) as a PNG stopped for that reason, and as a JPG at quality 85 they gave a file of 11 MB. For photos, choose JPG or WebP. A WebP can be at most 16,383 px on a side, and a JPG at most 65,500 px.

## Phone photos, animations and TIFF

Many phone photos store a rotation setting in the file. The tool applies it, so a photo taken with the phone turned shows upright. Camera and location tags are not written to the result.

For an animated WebP, only the first frame is used, and the result panel says which pictures were animations. GIF, BMP, AVIF, HEIC and SVG files are not accepted here. Convert them to PNG or JPG first. A TIFF with several pages gives its first page. Some browsers cannot draw a TIFF, so the preview can be missing for it, but the files are combined all the same.

## Limits: images, size and credits

You can combine from 2 to 20 images in one job. Each image can be up to 5 MB without an account and 10 MB signed in, and up to 16 MP (4096 x 4096). All the images together can be up to 20 MB and 32 MP without an account, and 60 MB and 64 MP signed in. The result can be up to 40 MP, measured as width x height. A choice that would be larger is refused before any work is done.

Each visitor without an account can run 30 jobs a day, and one combine job counts once, however many images it has. This count is shared with the convert, resize and compress tools. Each image you upload also counts toward 40 uploads a day. Signed-in jobs cost 1 credit, plus 1 credit for each started 5 MB of the result beyond the first 5 MB. You get 100 free credits every month. Failed and timed-out jobs are refunded in full.

This tool combines pictures in the layouts above. It is not a collage designer. It has no templates, text, stickers or rounded frames.

## Combine images from code

You can run the same job with the API in three steps. First send each image as raw bytes to https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/uploads with its Content-Type (image/png, image/jpeg, image/webp or image/tiff), one image per request. Each answer includes an upload_id. Then send a POST to https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/pdf-jobs with JSON that sets op to image_combine, your params, and files as the list of upload IDs in the order you want. The endpoint has "pdf" in its name for historical reasons, and image to PDF uses it too.

Poll GET /v1/jobs/:id until the job succeeds, fails or times out. The download_url is a short-lived signed link. Authorize with Bearer `<API key>` or x-api-key. The page shows a ready cURL, Node and Python example built from your settings. For the general API, see /docs/. Errors include 400 invalid_params, 413 total_too_large, 422 too_few_files and too_many_files, 404 upload_not_found, 402 insufficient_credits and 429 for rate limits.

## Privacy: what happens to your files

Your images are sent to our server, and the combining happens there. The uploaded images are used only to make the result. The working copies of the uploads are deleted as soon as the job ends, whether it succeeds or fails. The result is deleted after 10 minutes in the free web tool. We keep only basic job details such as the operation, time and status, not your file contents, and signed-in users can see their jobs in the dashboard. Download links are short-lived.

You must have the right to use the images you upload, as set out in our Acceptable Use Policy. The type of each file is read from its first bytes, not from its name. We do not add a watermark to the result.

## Questions

### Can I combine images for free?

Yes. You can combine images online without an account, up to 20 images per job and 30 jobs a day for each visitor. Each image needs its own human check. Signed-in users get 100 free credits every month.

### How do I put two pictures side by side?

Add both pictures and keep the layout Side by side. The first picture goes at the left. If the pictures have different heights, choose Same height to make them match, or choose an alignment.

### How do I merge images into one picture in a grid?

Choose Grid, add your images, and set the number of columns, or leave it empty for an automatic choice. Choose Same box if you want every cell to have the same size.

### How many images can I merge?

You can merge from 2 to 20 images in one job. All the images together can be up to 20 MB without an account and 60 MB signed in, and the result can be up to 40 MP.

### Can I combine photos of different sizes?

Yes. By default each photo keeps its own size, and alignment decides where it sits. You can also give all photos the same height, the same width or the same box. The empty space shows the background color.

### Does combining images reduce the quality?

Not when the pictures are not resized and you save as PNG, because they are copied as they are. A JPG or WebP result is compressed again, and a quality slider sets how much. A picture that is enlarged can look soft.

### Can I merge JPG files into one JPG?

Yes. Add the JPG files and choose JPG in Save as. You can also mix JPG, PNG, WebP and TIFF files and save the result as any of PNG, JPG or WebP.

### Can I make the background transparent?

Yes, for PNG and WebP. Tick Transparent, and the space between the images, the margin and empty cells stay transparent. JPG has no transparency, so it needs a background color.

### What happens to a GIF or an animated image?

GIF files are not accepted. An animated WebP gives its first frame only, and the result panel says so. To use another frame, export it as a picture first.

### Is this a collage maker?

No. It joins pictures in a row, a column or a grid, with spacing, a background and an optional common size. It has no templates, text or stickers.

### Can I combine images in my own code?

Yes. Upload each image, start an image_combine job with the list of upload IDs, poll the job and download the result. The page shows ready cURL, Node and Python examples built from your settings.
