# AVIF to JPG: Convert Your Image for Free

> A free online tool that converts an AVIF image to JPG (or PNG or WebP) with a quality setting, a background colour for transparent areas and an optional smaller size.

AVIF to JPG conversion takes one picture and saves it as a JPEG file, a format that many programs and sites accept. Upload an AVIF file, keep JPEG selected, and download the result with the .jpg extension. The free web tool needs no account, and the picture keeps its pixel size unless you choose a smaller one.

## Key facts

- Input: AVIF, PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF or BMP, up to 5 MB in the free tool and 10 MB when signed in, and up to 16 MP (4096 x 4096); the type is read from the file content, and HEIC, SVG, PDF and TIFF are not accepted.
- Output: a JPG (JPEG) with the same width and height unless you choose a smaller size (percent, longest side, or width and height; never enlarged, same credit); quality 1 to 100 (default 80); JPEG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a background colour (white by default). The tool reads AVIF but cannot save it.
- In our test a generated 2000 x 1500 px photograph saved as a 196 KB AVIF became a 377 KB JPG at quality 80, a 266 KB WebP and a 7.0 MB PNG; the test pictures were generated by our scripts.
- The AVIF decoder is aom, read through libheif inside sharp; an animated AVIF is converted from its first frame; the upload is deleted when the job ends and the result after 10 minutes; signed-in users pay 1 credit per image.
- Free without an account: up to 10 conversions per minute and 50 per day per visitor, no watermark. Signed in, each render costs 1 credit (100 free credits every month).
- Files are deleted automatically: 10 minutes after conversion without an account, 1 day with a free account.
- Developers can run the same render with POST https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/render and an API key (see the API docs page).

## How it works

1. Choose your AVIF file in the tool above.
2. Wait for the preview. Your browser checks the file type, file size and pixel count before upload and shows the image size.
3. Keep JPEG selected under "Convert to", or pick PNG or WebP. The quality setting starts at 80. To make the picture smaller in pixels, choose a size under "Size"; the default keeps the original size.
4. Click Convert to JPG and wait for the result panel.
5. Check the preview, then press Download. The file ends in .jpg.

## How to convert AVIF to JPG

Start by choosing your AVIF file in the tool above. Before upload, your browser checks the file type, the file size and the pixel count, and it shows a preview with the image size.

JPEG is already selected under "Convert to", so a standard JPG needs no change. When the job finishes, the result panel shows a preview on a checkerboard, the file size, the formats, the pixel size and how long the file is kept. If you search for avif to jpeg, this is the same conversion, because JPEG and JPG are the same format. Press Download to save the file, which ends in .jpg.

## What AVIF to JPG conversion does

This avif to jpg converter decodes your AVIF picture and encodes it again as a JPEG. The decoder is aom, the reference AV1 decoder, read through libheif. The encoding is done by sharp, which uses the libvips library. This is ordinary image processing, not artificial intelligence.

By default the pixel size stays the same. If your AVIF is 2000 by 1500 pixels, the JPG is also 2000 by 1500 pixels. Nothing is cropped. If you choose a smaller size under "Size", the picture is made smaller in the same step.

The conversion runs on our server, so the image is sent to us and is not processed in your browser. The uploaded file is used only to make the converted file.

## Why people convert AVIF to JPG

AVIF is a newer format. Some older software, old email clients, document editors and upload forms still do not open AVIF files, and that is the most common reason people make a JPG from one.

Many people meet .avif files without choosing them. A website may serve pictures in AVIF, so when you save an image from that site, the file keeps the .avif extension. Converting it lets you use the picture where AVIF is refused.

Browser support for AVIF is good but not universal, according to MDN. MDN lists support in Chrome 85, Edge 121, Opera 71, Firefox 93 and Safari 16.1, and it advises a WebP, JPEG or PNG fallback when you use AVIF on a page.

- Upload forms that reject .avif files
- Old email clients and document editors

## What AVIF is, in plain words

AVIF is an image format that stores pictures compactly. It supports an alpha channel, which means transparent areas, and it supports both lossless and lossy compression. MDN describes these features in its image format guide.

MDN also says that lossy AVIF images are around 50% smaller than JPEG images at visually similar levels. That is MDN's statement, not a figure we measured. Our own test results are in the file size section below.

MDN's general advice is to prefer WebP or AVIF for raster pictures on the web, with a fallback such as JPEG or PNG for browsers that cannot read AVIF. Converting to JPG is one way to prepare that fallback.

## AVIF to JPG: file size

A JPG made from an AVIF is usually larger than the AVIF, because AVIF compresses more efficiently. In our test, a synthetic 2000 by 1500 pixel photograph saved as a 196 KB AVIF became a 377 KB JPG at quality 80. The same picture became a 266 KB WebP at quality 80 and a 7.0 MB PNG.

In a second test, a 1024 by 1024 pixel transparent logo was 10 KB as AVIF and became a 25 KB JPG at quality 80, with the transparent area filled with white. Our test pictures were generated by our own scripts, not taken from real photographs, so results vary with the picture.

PNG stores every decoded pixel without loss, which is why it is so much larger. For JPG, the quality setting is the control you can change.

## Choosing the JPG quality

Quality runs from 1 to 100, and the default is 80. The setting applies to JPEG and to lossy WebP. PNG is lossless, so it has no quality setting.

Every JPG is lossy and loses a little detail each time it is saved. Each conversion decodes the AVIF and encodes a JPEG again, so detail already lost in the AVIF does not come back. Keep the original AVIF file, and if you need another version later, convert again from the original rather than from a JPG you made earlier.

- Start with the default of 80 and compare the result panel preview.

## Transparent AVIF to JPG

JPEG has no transparency. If your AVIF has transparent areas, the JPG fills them with a background colour. The default is white, #ffffff, and you can choose another colour.

If you need to keep transparency, pick PNG or WebP as the target. Both keep transparency by default, and you can turn the "Keep transparency" option off if you do not want it.

In our test, the transparent logo became a JPG with the transparent area filled with white. The result panel tells you whether transparency was kept or filled, so you can confirm the outcome before you download.

## AVIF to JPG or AVIF to PNG

Choose JPG when you need a small file for photos and the place you upload to accepts JPEG. Choose PNG when you need lossless pixels or transparency to stay. Both are valid answers, and the right one depends on where the file goes.

PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, but it is much larger. In our test, the synthetic photograph became a 7.0 MB PNG, while the JPG was 377 KB.

The tool offers PNG, JPEG and WebP under "Convert to", so you can change the target before you convert. Pick PNG when you need lossless output.

## Rotated photos, animated AVIF and metadata

If a picture is stored rotated with EXIF orientation, the converter turns it upright in the result. Camera and location tags, such as EXIF and GPS data, are not copied into the converted file.

An animated AVIF is converted from its first frame only, so the result is a still image.

The converter never crops. It keeps the pixel size unless you choose a smaller size under "Size", as described in the next section.

## Make the JPG smaller in pixels

Under "Size" you can make the picture smaller in pixels in the same step as the conversion. Choose a percent of the original, a longest side in pixels, or a width and a height. With a width or a height on its own, the other side follows the proportions. With both, the picture keeps its proportions and fits inside that box.

The tool only makes pictures smaller, never larger. A picture that is already smaller than the size you enter keeps its own size, and the result panel says so. Detail removed by making a picture smaller does not come back, so keep your original AVIF.

Fewer pixels usually also means a smaller file, which helps with upload limits. In our test with a generated photograph, a 2000 by 1500 pixel JPEG of 775 KB became a 37 KB JPEG at 800 pixels on the longest side. The tool does not aim for an exact file size in KB. Making the picture smaller costs 1 credit, the same as a plain conversion.

- Percent of the original, from 1 to 100
- Longest side, in pixels
- Width, height or both, in pixels

## Which files the converter accepts

The tool accepts AVIF, PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and BMP. It reads the file type from the content, not the file name, so a file renamed to .avif that is really something else is read as what it is or refused.

HEIC and HEIF files, the iPhone photo format, are not accepted and return an unsupported image message. SVG, PDF and TIFF are not accepted either. A corrupt AVIF also returns an unsupported image message.

The free web tool takes up to 5 MB per image and 30 images per day per visitor. Signed-in users can convert up to 10 MB per image. A picture over the pixel limit (16 MP (4096 x 4096)) is refused from the file header before it is decoded. If the result would be larger than 20 MB, the job fails with an output too large message instead of returning a cut-off file.

When you are signed in, each conversion costs 1 credit per image. Failed and timed-out jobs are refunded.

## AVIF converter: JPG, PNG or WebP output

This AVIF converter reads an AVIF file and saves it as JPG, PNG or WebP. JPEG is selected by default, so an AVIF to JPEG conversion needs no change to the settings.

Pick PNG or WebP under "Convert to" if you need a different format. The tool cannot save AVIF files, so it converts out of AVIF but not into it.

## AVIF to JPG from code

If you convert many pictures, you can call the API instead of the tool. Send the raw AVIF bytes as the body of a POST request to https://api.aiipworld.com/v1/image-jobs, with Content-Type set to image/avif. Add op=image_convert and format=jpeg to the query string.

Authenticate with your API key in an Authorization: Bearer header, or with x-api-key. The API returns 202 with a job_id. Poll GET /v1/jobs/:id until the status is succeeded, failed or timeout, then download the file from the short-lived download_url. Each request handles one image, and there is no batch endpoint and no webhooks yet.

To make the picture smaller in the same request, use op=image_resize instead of op=image_convert, with one of scale, max_side, or width and height, plus format=jpeg. It costs the same. The page shows a ready cURL, Node and Python example below the tool, and the API docs list every parameter.

## Privacy: what happens to your file

The uploaded image is used only to make the converted file. It is deleted as soon as the job ends, whether it succeeds or fails.

The converted file is kept for 10 minutes in the free web tool, then deleted. No history of your conversions is kept, and download links are short-lived.

Convert only pictures you have the right to use. The Acceptable Use Policy applies to uploads and results.

## Questions

### Can I use an avif to jpg converter for free?

Yes. The free web tool needs no account. Anonymous use needs a human check (Cloudflare Turnstile), and signed-in users skip it and use credits.

### Is converting AVIF to JPG lossless?

No. JPEG is a lossy format, so each saved JPG loses a little detail, and detail already lost in the AVIF does not come back.

### Why is my JPG bigger than the AVIF?

AVIF compresses more efficiently than JPEG, so a JPG of the same picture is usually larger. In our generated test, a 196 KB AVIF became a 377 KB JPG.

### What quality should I use when I change AVIF to JPG?

Start with the default of 80. The range is 1 to 100, and the setting applies to JPEG and lossy WebP.

### What happens to transparency?

JPEG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a background colour, white by default. Pick PNG or WebP if you need to keep transparency.

### Will the picture get smaller in pixels?

Not unless you ask. By default the width and height stay the same. To make the picture smaller, choose a percent, a longest side or a width and height under "Size". The tool never makes a picture larger and never crops.

### Does making the picture smaller cost extra?

No. It costs 1 credit per image for signed-in users, the same as a plain conversion, and the free web tool counts it as one of your 30 images per day.

### Can I convert AVIF to PNG or WebP?

Yes. Under "Convert to", pick PNG or WebP instead of JPEG. PNG is lossless, and both PNG and WebP keep transparency by default.

### Does the tool make AVIF files?

No. AVIF works as an input format only, and the tool cannot save AVIF.

### Can I convert HEIC files with this tool?

No. HEIC and HEIF files are not accepted and return an unsupported image message.

### What happens to an animated AVIF?

Only the first frame is converted, so the result is a still image.

### How long is my file kept?

The converted file in the free web tool is deleted after 10 minutes. The uploaded image is deleted as soon as the job ends.

### Can I convert AVIF to JPG in code?

Yes. Send the raw AVIF bytes to the image jobs endpoint with op=image_convert and format=jpeg, then poll the job until it finishes. The page shows cURL, Node and Python examples below the tool.

### Is there a free AVIF to JPEG converter with no account?

Yes. This AVIF to JPEG converter is an AVIF to JPG converter free of charge, and it needs no account. Anonymous use needs a human check, and signed-in users skip it and use credits. JPEG is the default output, so the file you download ends in .jpg.
